I Don't Get It -A Russian Spy Just Walks?

Paul William Hampel is going home - to Russia. We caught a Russian spy. We claim he was doing substantial damage to our country. He has no diplomatic immunity so he's fair game. Stockwell Day opines that the mystery agent might be "happier" just to go home. Then we cut a deal whereby that's exactly what he does - leaves.

We imprison burglars and yet those who insinuate themselves among us and burgle us of our industrial and security secrets get a fond "adieu" as we fly them home?

According to the Toronto Star, comrade Hampel's lawyers said he refused to reveal what he was doing here. So, I guess that means he gets to take his secrets and our secrets home with him.

I always thought spies were fiercely interrogated (humanely of course) to find out what they were up to, the identities of their collaborators and dupes, and just what they had managed to send to their masters. We need to know what the other side has learned from and about us, it's called damage control. We need to be able to roll up the whole operation and everyone in it.

We just let this guy walk? No wonder he's happy.
