He's Singing Like a Canary

Afghanistan has a powerful new asset to support its claim that Pakistan is giving sanctuary and support to the Taliban.

He might be called a Taliban media liason officer or publicity agent or at least he was before he was nabbed a couple of days ago near the Pakistan border. He is Mohammad Hanif and his Afghan captors have been sweating him for information since his capture. Whatever they've been doing to him seems to have loosened his tongue - a lot.

Hanif's most powerful revelation is his claim that former Taliban leader, Mullah Omar, is hiding in Pakistan where he lives under the protection of Pakistan's Inter-services Intelligence Agency.

In a recording of his interrogation shown to journalists, Mr Hanif also alleges that the former head of Pakistan's intelligence service, Hamid Gul, supported Taliban militants in their fight against Afghan and foreign troops.

Pakistan, staying true to form, has responded angrily, denying everything.
