Sorry, Canada. I Only Just Heard.

Got the motorcycle ready to go out for a spin today.  I'll wait until afternoon when the temp is expected to reach 7C.  Ordinarily I'd prefer 10C but, hey, it is New Year's Day.

Then I read about you folks in the rest of Canada.   Deep Freeze.  CBC is reporting wind chill temps in the -50C range in Alberta and Manitoba.  Even -6C for Toronto.  It's this time of year that reminds us just why we chose to live on the west coast.

Hey, c'mon - this is just the start of the west coast gloating season when we start phoning all our relatives in the deep freeze of the east. You ought to see what we do when the tulips come up. Besides, we get rain - we just don't have to shovel it.

Rain fall here seems way down in amount so far this winter. All the better for me, I still get a nice bike ride along the sea wall in most days. Lately I've been doing it with just a couple of layers on. Warren and I are shortly heading down to the beach for the annual January 1 madness known as the polar bear swim. These days we're just spectators though.

Yes indeed, Elliott. I've always found the polar bear swim is best enjoyed from the beach.

I'm actually a bit worried about the low rainfall. I'm figuring low rainfall where I am means little snowpack up on the mountains. Little snowpack on the mountains means little spring runoff into the reservoirs. Little spring runoff into the reservoirs means what are we going to be drinking come late summer?

If we start getting a pattern of reduced rainfall and nice weather like we've been having lately, that'll be enjoyable and all but it poses some problems for Vancouver's sustainability. Bloody climate change--even the changes that seem nice are dangerous.

I'm worried also, PLG. Mt. Washington, which often has the best snow in the province, hasn't been able to open so far this year and I think the same holds true for most runs on the Vancouver hills.

We definitely need that snowpack.

Sure, all you have to worry about is earthquakes and Tsunamis. I'll take the cold out here in Montreal over earthquakes any day, but I do miss those mild BC winters.
