When you look at the history of corporations going back to the Venetian spice trade it becomes apparent that this may be a convenient vehicle for conducting commerce but it's one with enormous flaws that tends to exploit rather than adapt to political, social and economic advances.

With globalization came the willing it unwitting surrender of real sovereignty. Our nations largely gave up control of movement of capital and then placed shackles on their ability to control access to our markets.

In going global we seem to have bought the line that all tariffs are bad when in fact they tend to be a mix of good and bad. They can serve us quite well to ensure trade balances and to effect social policy and even foreign policy.

Canadians are fortunate in having a large territory with a small population, something that has enabled us to maintain a viable resource economy. As hewers of wood and drawers of water, we grumble and yet remain comfortably secure in the face of globalization with a slightly positive international trade balance. The Mound of Soundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09023839743772372922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32931256.post-11339462664444211712008-03-22T10:33:00.000-07:002008-03-22T10:33:00.000-07:00Never was there clearer proof for the American pub...Never was there clearer proof for the American public that our country is totally controlled by a global corporatist Empire only hiding behind the facade of this 'vichy' government --- currently headed by the faux-emperor Bush and his vice emperor.

Unfortunately, most Americans, in wishful ignorance, believe that the 2008 election of a Democratic headed government will end this tragedy ---- whereas, it will only switch the 'vichy' party fronting for the exact same global corporatist Empire.

It is the corporatist Empire and not Cheney's arrogant contempt of democracy that is the real and continuing existential threat to the US --- and the world.

Alan MacDonald
Sanford, MaineAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32931256.post-91155430458299404262008-03-19T09:40:00.000-07:002008-03-19T09:40:00.000-07:00He is right about fundamental change.
