The International Monetary Fund has reported that the real value (vs. "book" value) of global fossil subsidies comes in at around $5 trillion. The IMF pegs Canada's real value subsidies at over $46-billion per year. Canada acknowledges only book value subsidies at just over 2-billion a year.

https://www.imf.org/en/News/Articles/2015/09/28/04/53/sonew070215a

https://thetyee.ca/Opinion/2016/02/01/IMF-Fossil-Fuel-Subsidies/

If Canada did try to cover that $46 billion spread by ending deferrals, exemptions and recovering the value of the natural capital the fossil giants have been consuming for free, there would be no bitumen and no coal industry in our country.

The Mound of Soundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09023839743772372922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32931256.post-63197117245739509892018-04-09T13:35:19.675-07:002018-04-09T13:35:19.675-07:00 Yeah and in the process you screw over the poor. ... When I first read the article on cbc north on Wednesday night it quoted the question."do you believe climate change is caused by humans rather than normal cycles?" I would have had to honestly answer no as there are regular 25 year cycles in weather but rising oceans and yearly "once in a century events" are not part of those cycles. On Thursday I read the articles you quoted from and the 40% was now deemed as fact. "fake" news anyone? The last survey I saw was one which asked the question "do you think man has affected the climate in any way over the last few centuries" and the results were a low 80% in North America ( where we have been lied to for decades) to nearly 100% in china and much of Europe with the average of 92% agreeing with the question. The only math course I liked was statistics where my professor proved you can get any result you want by changing the variables and the most important thing to look for is the data put in to determine if the answer coming out is real or not.billnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32931256.post-60671983260683978552018-04-09T11:28:59.735-07:002018-04-09T11:28:59.735-07:00Anon, carbon pricing can work if it is punishing e...Anon, carbon pricing can work if it is punishing enough to force change. How high would the price of gas have to go to force you to make changes?

If the various Canadian governments would stop subsidizing carbon industries many would make real changes to the way they do business. Some would close their doors permanently. My guess is that if the subsidies were removed we wouldn't need a carbon tax. It will cost 1000's of dollars to convert your furnace to electricity or to buy an electric vehicle. It's cheaper to pay the carbon tax. As well, I know of some people in the lower mainland that just go to the States to buy their gas, which makes it look like the carbon tax is working by reducing demand, but is actually accomplishing nothing. I was reading an opinion piece on the internet over the weekend whereby the author was advocating for the government to restrict supply and force us to wean ourselves off fossil fuels, or at least to have that discussion. I think that is the way to go.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32931256.post-45362562989679187232018-04-09T09:49:28.341-07:002018-04-09T09:49:28.341-07:00"Would You Vote Liberal Again?"
