We have extreme Muslims and we have extreme Christians. Neither group keeps to its faith, its all about power, control and subjugating others. They can all go to hell.

As to the coming year, I was feeling O.K. about it and then dtrump had Suleimani murdered. The picture I gleaned from reading research studies, reports (mainly peer-reviewed stuff), analysis stuff and media summaries over the past decade does not foster optimism for this coming decade.

I see that Monbiot is now calling for a rewilding of the oceans, a measure that would involve beaching much of the world's industrial fishing fleet. I can't say he's wrong but it sounds like a pipe dream. He did mention he's also battling the same cancer that laid him low two years back.

Looking back on the 2010s what I found most inspiring was when a few climate scientists found their voice and warned that fighting climate change will probably be futile unless we also tackle its companion threats - overpopulation and excessive consumption. University of Hawaii climate prof, Camilo Mora, was one of the first to point out the obvious. He said that his colleagues privately praised his article but refused to stand with him fearing that it might trigger pushback that could threaten their climate research. Imagine, the overwhelming majority of the scientific community so utterly cowed.

I have been convinced for many years that our only hope is for mankind to learn to live in harmony with the environment, our biosphere, Spaceship Earth, because it's all we've got. Among them is the need to get the human population down to around two billion. There are ways to do that without violence but none that seem remotely acceptable to our power structures, economic and political, or, for that matter, the people of the developed nations.

I suppose it's the knowledge that we're not really prepared to make the sacrifices essential for our own survival that leaves me with a dismal outlook on the 2020s. Damn but I hope I'm wrong. The Disaffected Libhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13135599782685108764noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32931256.post-15710774454446604932020-01-02T01:58:40.654-08:002020-01-02T01:58:40.654-08:00Good for Hedges ...he calls it the way it is. Well, folks, there is one hope.....goes by the name Bernie Sanders. A candidate, depending on who you might believe, that is doing fairly well in the opinion of many voters and, if not stopped, could actually win the Democratic nomination. An outcome even too horrible to contemplate for the 1%. So the establishment powers, even the Democrat ones, will stop at nothing to ensure that one hope is destroyed. Dems (Wasserman-Shultz et al) managed it nicely in 2016. This time around? Wall St. Dem. muck-a-mucks have already warned they will support Trump if Dems. dare nominate even E. Warren, aka ‘Sanders lite’. 2020 looks like it’s gonna be an interesting year!
