I saw this last night on the Daily Show, a breathtaking example of how utterly screwed up America's presidency has become. It was George w. Bush hisself opining on the sad fate of Nelson Mandela:
"I heard somebody say, Where's Mandela?' Well, Mandela's dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas."
George Bush, by all accounts is not a stupid man. Oh hell, he is so.
"All we can do is reassure people, especially South Africans, that President Mandela is alive," Achmat Dangor, chief executive officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
It's been a week now. Surely you know how wrong you were.
ReplyDeletecuriously enough, even after a whole week I don't change my opinion unless I find some good reason for it. You had something to add, anon?
ReplyDeleteHere's why you are wrong...this is what Bush said:
ReplyDelete"Part of the reason why there is not this instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein’s brutal rule.
"I thought an interesting comment was made when somebody said to me, I heard somebody say, where’s Mandela? Well, Mandela is dead, because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas. He was a brutal tyrant that divided people up and split families, and people are recovering from this."
If you cannot understand that Bush is talking about a Mandela-style leader in Iran, then something is seriously wrong.
It's plain as day what Bush said and meant. Watch out for out of context quotes...they'll always bite you.
Let's see, Shrub "heard somebody say, "Where's Mandela"?" Get real. It sure didn't come from his boss, Cheney, who was flat against efforts to free Mandela.
ReplyDeletePray tell, what Iraqi Mandela was bush referring to? Get real.
No really. Now you're just being stupid. It's a fairly simple sentence. All he's saying is that the reason there seem to be no great Iraqi politicians trying to bring the country together (like Mandela did in South Africa) is that anyone who was brave enough to do this had already been killed by Saddam years ago. I think its called a metaphor or something like that.
ReplyDeleteNow you can argue that he is wrong in this assumption and that the real reason for failure in Iraq is because no one likes being invaded and blown up but its intellectually dishonest to edit someone in the way you are doing.
The person using the Mandela metaphor, that Bush was refering to, was the ambassador to Iraq at a gathering where he was the quest speaker.
ReplyDeleteThe real irony of this is that someone too stupid to understand what a metaphor is thinks Bush is an idiot. Priceless.
ReplyDeleteWell, anon, I'm not surprised you call me an idiot. Those who hide behind "anon" seem given to that sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteYou don't know what I think of Bush, you can't. For starters, I don't think he's stupid. He has no vast intellect but he's not stupid. What Mr. Bush shows is that you don't have to be stupid to act profoundly stupidly.
Mr. Bush has certainly acted more stupidly than any president in my memory and that goes back to Eisenhower.
He's intellectually lazy, horribly so. That's why he relies so heavily on dogma, often expressed in annoyingly repetitive cliche. He speaks, and too often acts, without thinking. His perceived strengths are the stuff of hubris.
Just look what he has done to your America. Incurious George has ineptly done America's enemies bidding. His blundering from Afghanistan to Iraq has been nothing short of a blessing for al-Qaeda and bin Laden. His stupidity in invading Iraq has only been trumped by his utter indifference to the occupation, allowing it to turn into a genuine American quagmire. If you're looking for "priceless", there it is - right in your face.
It's telling that you're so obsessed with defending this clown on metaphor when his policies and actions have been so uniformly and horribly indefensible.
You're right, he's not stupid. The frat boy has a mediocre intellect harnessed to a lazy and irresponsible character. Voila - America today!
"Those who hide behind "anon" seem given to that sort of thing."
ReplyDeletethe irony is rich, "mound of sound".
It seems "mound of sound" doesn't even know what he's written...
ReplyDeleteIn the original post he said, "George Bush, by all accounts is not a stupid man. Oh hell, he is so," but then in a retort to someone who called "mound of sound" an "idiot", he said, "You don't know what I think of Bush, you can't. For starters, I don't think he's stupid."
I think it's pretty clear what "mound of sound" thinks. It's too bad he can't see it for himself.
LMAO.
ReplyDeletePriceless.
