Arctic Ice Free Sooner Than Expected

Forget about 2050 or even 2030. In less than three years the Arctic Ocean could become ice free.

Louis Fortier, scientific director of ArcticNet, a Canadian research network, said the sea ice is melting faster than predicted by models created by international teams of scientists, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

They had forecast the Arctic Ocean could be free of summer ice as early as 2050. But Fortier told an international conference on defence and security in Quebec City yesterday that the worst-case scenarios are becoming reality.

"The frightening models we didn't even dare to talk about before are now proving to be true," Fortier told CanWest News Service, referring to computer models that take into account the thinning of the sea ice and the warming from the albedo effect -- the Earth is absorbing more energy as the sea ice melts.

The Arctic, considered to be the barometer of global climate change, is warming faster than expected and this could cause global average temperatures to rise still more.

"The most unbelievable thing is the total absence of ice in straits where you never thought you would ever be able to navigate. The changes are not progressive anymore, they are dramatic," he said.
When it comes to our political leadership and global warming, the Harper Tories are positively neanderthal in responding. If we're going to deal with this we have to act nationally, independently. No more, "we'll act when China does." That's a dodge, a way to justify a global climate change gridlock.
We can fault the Chinese for having just edged out the US in total GHG emissions. They can fault the West for already having contributed the overwhelming share of GHGs that have brought us to where we are today and still being unwilling to take meaningful remedial action. Great, we all get to blame each other and - do nothing. That's a suicide pact and it's got to end.
We're criminally irresponsible if we let this charade continue. People, who just happen to be the poorest people living in distant lands, are going to pay an awful price for our selfishness. For a guy who claims to be a devout Christian, Harper seems pretty indifferent to the suffering that will follow from his "intensity-based" chicanery. Love Thy Neighbour, Steve.

  1. Well if the world is going to end in a few years then I guess a 30% reduction of our 2% global GHG emissions aren't going to do anything to stop it. Sell all your belongings, move to the mountains and buy lots of canned goods before it's too late.

  2. Did the Chinese not sail in an Ice free Arctic a thousand years ago??
In the 70's we were told "by scientists" that we were heading into another Ice Age.
In the 80's we were told "Acid Rain" was going to destroy the planet.
In the 90's we were told the "Ozone Layer" was going away . . . we would all die of skin cancen.
Now we have "Gorebull Warming" . . . does anyone see a pattern here??
Many scientists have distanced themselves from the IPCC because of selective data in their summaries. Since 1998 the world has been cooling slightly, the warmest years were in the 30's, and the promised upsurge in hurricanes didn't happen.
Computer models can't predict the weather next week . . . how could anyone know what was going to happen in 6 months or 6 years?
By the way . . . Whistler is opening this weekend, one of the earliest on record . . . must be Gorebull warming making all that snow!!!

  3. Preschool if you had a tiny fraction of the knowledge you claim to possess you would know not to eat the stuff you've been swallowing. Go to the Royal Society's web site and they deconstruct every fantasy you continuously spew out. Your claptrap is really getting tiresome.

  4. Look, oldschool, before you go running your mouth again on this blog, read this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7092614.stm
If you can't be bothered to do that then just go away.

  5. Mound . . . if you have it all figured out . . . .
Explain to everyone how Human Produced CO2 is effecting the planet . . . and changing things . . . and how this miserable small group of 30 odd million Canucks can save the planet???

Climate change skeptics include even Al Gore’s mentor, Dr. Roger Revelle. When Revelle disagreed with Gore, Gore insisted that he was senile.
Why do these scientists go out on a limb when it would be easier to go along to get along? Just about every testable prediction that climate scaremongers have made has turned out to be false.

Contrary to their predictions, Polar Bear populations have been steady or increasing, and are so populous that hunting them is legal.

And most importantly, contrary to their predictions, human life spans are increasing and by any measure human well-being is at its all-time high in human history. In fact, if one were to plot average global temperatures along with human well-being, there is pretty much a one-to-one correlation between a warmer earth and better standards of living and human population growth.

Unfortunately, for politicians the facts are entirely beside the point, because studying the facts would get in the way of those trying to grasp enormous amounts of money and power at the expense of the average citizen.

Quote by Mark Twain "The most outrageous lies that can be invented will find believers if a man only tells them with all his might".
This is in the Far Left Socialist's training manual and used 24/7 by ALL MEMBERS.

  6. Read the piece in the bbc news . . . the guy still uses the "Hockey Stick" graph . . . this defies logis . . . even the IPCC doesn't push this un-scientific fraud.
The fact that billions and billions of dollars have been given to scientists to promote the GW Theory . . . many times what has been spent by those scientists who don't share their views.
Here is a comment from one scientist who is not on the payroll:

Dr William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts, told a packed lecture hall at the University of North Carolina that humans were not responsible for the warming of the earth.

"We're brainwashing our children," said Dr Gray, 78, a long-time professor at Colorado State University. "They're going to the Gore movie [An Inconvenient Truth] and being fed all this. It's ridiculous."

At his first appearance since the award was announced in Oslo, Mr Gore said: "We have to quickly find a way to change the world's consciousness about exactly what we're facing."

Mr Gore shared the Nobel prize with the United Nations climate panel for their work in helping to galvanise international action against global warming.

But Dr Gray, whose annual forecasts of the number of tropical storms and hurricanes are widely publicised, said a natural cycle of ocean water temperatures - related to the amount of salt in ocean water - was responsible for the global warming that he acknowledges has taken place.

However, he said, that same cycle meant a period of cooling would begin soon and last for several years.

"We'll look back on all of this in 10 or 15 years and realise how foolish it was," Dr Gray said.

During his speech to a crowd of about 300 that included meteorology students and a host of professional meteorologists, Dr Gray also said those who had linked global warming to the increased number of hurricanes in recent years were in error.

He cited statistics showing there were 101 hurricanes from 1900 to 1949, in a period of cooler global temperatures, compared to 83 from 1957 to 2006 when the earth warmed.

"The human impact on the atmosphere is simply too small to have a major effect on global temperatures," Dr Gray said.

He said his beliefs had made him an outsider in popular science.

"It bothers me that my fellow scientists are not speaking out against something they know is wrong," he said. "But they also know that they'd never get any grants if they spoke out. I don't care about grants."

  7. Oldschool, read my post "The Alchemist's Prize". It's a complete and irrefutable answer to this utter crap that skeptical scientists can't be heard because the can't get funding. That's the most hands-down stupid claim and you continue to cling to it. Is your mind that much of a blank that it's so easily filled with nonsense?
