Calling a court hearing in the middle of a summer holiday long weekend is the judicial equivalent of a midnight raid by the police. There's always a taint of skulduggery to it, of business transacted in the dark.
Yet the government of the day chose this past Sunday to get an Ontario judge to finally send Karlheinz Schreiber winging his way back to his native Germany. Regardless of the obvious merits of the extradition, the question that has not been asked and remains unanswered is "why Sunday?" Why not Tuesday when everyone is back at work and it's business as usual in the courts? What was so critical that this had to be sprung in the middle of a holiday weekend? What's that smell?
Former Mulroney aide Norman Spector writing in today's Globe & Mail recites a litany of questions unasked, unanswered that may now be buried with Schreiber's imprisonment in Germany:

It is odd that a fast one was pulled over a long weekend. The defence lawyer for Karlheinz Schreiber could do nothing. Something stinks here.
