This is said to be the earliest known 35-mm. film, taken from a cable car in San Francisco in 1906. Does anybody have the "right of way" or is this just survival anarchy?
Notice how everybody seems to be so purposeful in their stride? Not much casual strolling. I suspect it's the result of two things - the traffic threat and having to cross streets covered in horse crap. I think that would teach you to take big strides and be careful where you plant your feet.
Unfortunately this blog doesn't show the full video. The right side is cut off. Best to follow this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=NINOxRxze9k
What a great piece of madness.. no laws for the street, I guess.
ReplyDeleteThe film is in good shape for its age.
That's fascinating, I could be wrong but I think that is Market St. and, probably taken in early 1906 (before the "great" earthquake and, resultant fires)
ReplyDeleteFull points Sassy! Yes indeed that is Market St. and visible is the clock tower at Embarcadero Wharf. You're spot on about the timing too. This was filmed just four days prior to the earthquake. By the time the quake hit the film was en route to New York for processing.
