Gee the Vatican can't help but stir up the very waters it's trying so desperately to calm. First they compared criticism of RC kid-diddling to anti-semitism. Then it was dismissed as "petty gossip." Then some retired RC nutjob blamed the criticism on a Zionist plot.
Today the pope's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone risked jumped into the pool by claiming that paedophilia was linked to homosexuality and had nothing to do with the Vatican's doctrine of celibacy:
"Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and pedophilia but many others have shown, I have recently been told, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and paedophilia," he told a news conference in Santiago.
It does appear, however, that pope Benny is feeling the heat. He's now issued directions to Bishops to report kid-diddling to the police. From The Guardian:
The short set of rules, published online in English, is an attempt to satisfy critics who have accused the Catholic church of covering up some of the dozens of abuse cases coming to light in the US and Europe. "Civil law concerning reporting of crimes to the appropriate authorities should always be followed," it states.
Francis X Rocca, Vatican correspondent for Religion News Service, said: "This is a new and notable public emphasis on the need to follow local laws."
The Vatican daily L'Osservatore Romano described the rules as part of a "transparency drive" adopted by the Vatican. The document, it added, was based on the Motu Proprio, the 2001 Vatican ruling which ordered bishops to forward abuse cases to Rome.
But one Vatican expert said the 2001 document gave no specific instructions on reporting to the police. "There is no similar sentence in the Motu Proprio," said John Allen, senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. "The Vatican may say these guidelines make explicit what was always understood but the truth is that for years abuse was not reported to the police."
In Ireland, bishops reportedly understood the 2001 rules to mean they should not tell police about abuse.
If you're a man who preys on young girls is this sickness because you're a heterosexual. No, of course not. Pedophilia is not related to homosexuality or heterosexuality. There is, however, links to acts such as pedophilia in sexual repression.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that Anon. You led me to Google "sexual repression and paedophilia" and the response certainly bears out your point.
ReplyDeleteThe following is excerpted from just one of the many sites dealing with this:
"...statements by Dr. Jay Feierman support a link between sexual repression and pedophilia. As a psychiatrist who has met with hundreds of pedophilic priests at a Catholic treatment center in New Mexico, Feierman is in a position to recognize the connection.
Feierman says celibacy is not "a natural state for humans to be in." Pointing to the celibacy requirement as a cause of clergy abuse of children, he explains: "If you tell a man that he's not allowed to have particular friends, he's not allowed to be affectionate, he's not allowed to be in love, he's not allowed to be a sexual being, you shouldn't be surprised at anything that happens."
Research by the University of New Hampshire's David Finkelhor, Ph.D., supports the same position. Finkelhor, a recognized expert on the study of sexual abuse of children, has shown that repressive sexual attitudes linked to many religions may predispose some persons toward sexual activities with children.
Further support for that causal connection is provided by Dr. John Money, a leading expert on sexual violence. Money has pioneered treatments for deviate sexuality at Johns Hopkins Medical School. He says people raised in conditions where sex is viewed as evil, and where sexual curiosity is a punishable offense, are likely to end up with warped sexual identities. Those surroundings are often produced by conservative religions.
You might even be able to observe this behavior in animals, too. There's a male cat in the neighbourhood that missed the mating season, and now it's preying on any cat that moves.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see you adopted my use of the word "diddling" when it comes to men having fun with children. Anyong
ReplyDeleteTroy Thomas....yup! Men like to act like cats that can't get it. Is that what you are saying? So...when men can't get it, they no longer have a brain to think with and have to diddle young girls and boys...hmmm!! Men don't have any control?? If that is the case then they ought to fiddle their diddle in any hole they can find other than diddling children. You do know that syphilis came from men screwing cows. Anyong
ReplyDeleteWas the above anonymous poster smoking something when he/she wrote that? Bizarrrrrrrrre
ReplyDeleteRead what you wrote Troy. It seems anyone who is direct is smoking something. That is the tactic of a person who doesn't like questions when it comes to males who are disgusting.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all Anyong, it's presumptuous of you to claim the word "diddling." Do you think I or anyone else heard that from you? Second, you tend to paint men with a pretty broad brush and that's simply bigoted. A very small percentage of men have uncontrollable urges so ratchet down the rhetoric. There's a difference between being direct and hyperbole that borders on foolishness.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Monks in Asia use herbs that supress sexual desire. Anyong
ReplyDeleteI have not claimed the word "diddling" to be mine however but it is very adequate, I did use it as a description regarding priests who have abused children in a comment in reference to your first blog regarding the pope and you have picked it up in the manner I used it. I said priests diddling children you have said kid dillers. My comment about you using it was not in any way shape or form meant in a dirogatory manner. It simply meant you see its value in regards to these acts against children. I will paint men who have abused children especially in the RC Church and who are being protected by the RC Church as disgusting because that is what they are and especially the Pope for allowing it to go on. I won't let excuses for these priests or any one else's acts against children go by without comment. They are what they are and they cannot be rehabilitated. It is not right to try and make it okay by saying they have urges...the urges are used against children. They are what they are. These priest are only concerned with the act...they don't care that it is or were children. We are talking about priests who have molested children right? You can label me bigoted all you want..the truth is the truth and I do not put all men in the same catagory...that would indeed be foolish. Anyong
