Isn't This Illegal? Harper Offers Big Bucks to Quebec for Votes

 A 2.2-billion dollar bribe?

Stephen Harper.   The Canadian taxpayer funded treasury.  Steve tells Quebeckers that, if they elect his government, he'll settle the multi-billion dollar HST feud with Quebec and send them a $2.2-billion cheque.

If Quebec is legitimately entitled to that money, why has Harper not sent it to them long ago?   How can Captain Weasel tie Canadian taxpayers' money to his electoral performance?

Is this "vote for me and I'll finally do what's right" or "vote for me and the cheque will be in the mail, no questions asked"?

Doesn't Captain Weasel have even a shred of integrity in his body?

Actually while Harper is plainly morally corrupt and is obviously hoping to corrupt Quebec voters to back Tory candidates, he's technically not in violation of the Canada Elections Act which provides:

 (1) Every person is guilty of an offence who, during an election period, directly or indirectly offers a bribe to influence an elector to vote or refrain from voting or to vote or refrain from voting for a particular candidate.

I don't know if it's possible to bribe someone or an entire province of voters with their own money and Harper wasn't really trying to influence the people of Quebec to vote for "a particular candidate" either.  He just wants them to back Tory candidates with Harper's promise of $2.2 billion for good behaviour.

  1. And once again, no one from the MSM has asked this question.

  2. Because Double Nickel, it's easier and more fun to believe that us evul Quebecers are free-loaders who keep asking for more.

Charming. Blackmailing us to vote for him. Play ball with him and he'll pay us that 20 year HST debt??? Nice! Even more precious is how most Canadians don't seem to think we should get our HST money, but are just fine with ONtario and BC getting theres', as they should.

They bash Quebec for wanting to separate, but they sure don't make us feel welcome here neither.

  3. CK - I'm clueless about this issue. I take it, however, that you're saying this is a federal obligation going back 20 years? And this is the first time in his five years in power that Harper has acknowledged the debt? And that he seems to be saying to Quebecois that they had better deliver up Tory seats if they want to see that $2.2 billion?

This sounds like something from the Deep South or a banana republic. Christ, has Harper brought us this low?

  4. We harmonized our sales tax in 92 when Bourassa was still premier. Never saw a cent from it since.

Yet, Ontario and BC were compensated shortly after harmonizing their's (and bigger compensations than the 2.2 billion our gov't is asking for, let me assure you) shortly afterwards.

I'll do you one better. Not sure if you've been following my blog lately, particularly both my Quebec riding watch posts and one not a week before. About a day after the budget fell but before the non-confidence, our natural resources minister, Nathalie Normandeau finally got a deal with the feds pertaining to that oil and gas field in the Gulf of St-Lawrence which straddles the borders of Quebec and Newfoundland/Laborador. NL/L got their go ahead to explore and drill, as you may know. We never did until that fateful day. The deal gives us 100% of the royalties. However, there were 2 catches: one was he threatened Duceppe that if he triggered an election, the deal wouldn't be ratified. Also, Jean Charest couldn't actively intervene against Stevie Spiteful the way he did in 2008.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not wild about deep water drilling, however, I don't like the idea of the feds giving us a deal with those kinds of stipulations I mentioned above; picture any kind of deal if you will.

Furthermore, it appears that certain Harpercon candidates are pitting English against French these days. Nice! We achieved linguistic peace years ago and now they're stirring up trouble.

I am totally pissed. If the unthinkable happens and Harper gets his majority, I really hope we separate. Sorry if that offends any of you, but the Quebec bashing of the Harpercon cheerleading tea-bagging shrieking monkeys running the whole show is nauseating.

  5. Relax, CK, I'm not easily offended. I really dislike the way Harper is abusing his powers to use federal government property and interests to grease his electoral advancement. Do this, or else. Don't do this, or else. This "Harper government" thing is real. He truly believes the assets of the country are at his disposal for his personal benefit. This guy is morally corrupt. "Play ball with me and I've got 2.2 billion dollars for you."
