Australia has just logged 2013 into the books as the hottest year ever recorded. 2013 was also the year that Australians voted in a rabid, free enterprise fossil fueler/climate change denialist as prime minister. PM Tony Abbott wasted no time in dismantling the government's already limited climate change institutions and abolishing the carbon tax. He led the effort at the Warsaw climate summit to thwart the poor and vulnerable Third World countries' plea for financial aid. He even appointed a climate change charlatan head of his Business Advisory Council to openly denounce the IPCC for holding the world hostage to climate change madness.
Research keeps coming in warning that Australia will be first in line among the developed nations to experience climate change catastrophe but that's of no moment to guys like Tony Abbott.
So, Oz, I guess sometimes you really do get the government you deserve. Oh well, at least you can be the miners' canary for the rest of us. And, when that day does roll around, be sure you know where to find that Tony Abbott guy.
As Karen commented on my blog, Mound, the choice the Australians made in electing the Abbott government is a compelling argument against making voting mandatory.
ReplyDeleteThere is some merit in Karen's point, Lorne. Mandatory voting does add a category of easily manipulated types to the mix.
