Palestinians Want NATO Buffer

Palestinian Authority president Mahmound Abbas is floating the idea of a permanent, i.e. generational, NATO force to patrol a buffer zone separating his nation from Israel.

Palestine, he said, would not have its own army, only a police force, so the NATO mission would be responsible for preventing the weapons smuggling and terrorism that Israel fears.

"For a long time, and wherever they want, not only on the eastern borders, but also on the western borders, everywhere," Mr Abbas said of the imagined NATO mission. "The third party can stay. They can stay to reassure the Israelis, and to protect us.

"We will be demilitarised. Do you think we have any illusion that we can have any security if the Israelis do not feel they have security?"

For an alliance that has spent more than a decade in futile service in Afghanistan, NATO could redeem itself in bringing peace to a Middle East sore spot.

One can only expect Netanyahu to how like a scalded cat at the notion of NATO soldiers standing between Israeli forces and the Palestinian population.

  1. If NATO forces stand between Israel and Palestine, then how can the end times even begin?

The self chosen evangelical nut jobs must get their way. Didn't you get the memo?

  2. Abbas is suffering from illusion. Does he really expect that NATO will be impartial? I have my serious doubts. I don't think western nations really want a fair and peaceful resolution of Israeli and Palestinian conflict. They have always stood on the side of Israel.

A while ago there was a news item that "Arnon Milchan was the first one who provided the necessary material to Israel to make its first atomic bomb." He is a Hollywood film-maker and news item was written in a celebrative way as if he was a hero. Why did west not protest? So much for their impartiality. According to Jimmy Carter Israel has over 200 nuclear warheads. Why there is a complete silence when it comes to Israel? No other nation in the Middle East is allowed to even refine plutonium for nuclear power production.

  3. Abbas has always suffered from illusion. But those with fewer illusions have also made little progress; the other side just have too many advantages, and clear sight only goes so far in countering them.

The Palestinians may be hooped until the oil runs out or we switch to renewables and the oil becomes irrelevant. When that happens, the US and EU won't care what happens in the Middle East and won't feel the need to pump billions of dollars and masses of political effort into backing their "unsinkable aircraft carrier".
Or if the US economy implodes and their military and economic grasp shrinks drastically, the Palestinians (and the Hondurans and Colombians for instance, various African countries, the Afghans and Yemeni and . . .) might see some light at the end of the tunnel.
