I watched the videos after the Sainsbury's ad too, the making of and the story behind. It makes me wonder, as every time I have heard that story, why everyone went back to the trenches?
Had they not, Karen, the soldiers on both sides would have been treated as mutineers by their own commanders and, as such, either attacked or arrested and executed. It's the sort of thing high command would fear could become contagious which is why it's very quickly and harshly put down.
I guess I understood that too, but it just fills me with such sadness. That this thing happened, was written about and the story handed down for 100 years with the remark that even during conflict we are able to connect and give to one another, and that it touches us must mean we don't really want that conflict. We seem to be capable of such bigness, and yet we keep being small.
The people who "want" war are rarely found in trench lines, Karen. They're the monsters who beat the war drums, drive war fever, and herd an unwitting public into recruiting centres. In August the German financial paper, Handelsblatt, warned that we're now once again being "mentally mobilized" for war.
