What If Crazy Ol' Pat is Right?

Just get'em some muskets and grey uniforms and they'll be away to the races. This, according to uber rightwinger Pat Buchanan, who says all this gay stuff like legalizing same sex marriage has the country primed for revolution.

In his latest column at WorldNetDaily, paleoconservative commentator Pat Buchanan argued that given the Supreme Court’s ruling that legalized same-sex marriage and the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s decision to remove the Ten Commandments monument from the state capitol grounds, a “rebellion” unlike any seen since the Civil Rights Movement “is likely to arise from the right.”

Buchanan situated this “coming era of civil disobedience” in a long tradition that began with the Founding Fathers. “What else was our revolution but a rebellion to overthrow the centuries-old rule and law of king and parliament, and establish our own?” he asked.

...Buchanan connected the coming struggle with the Civil Rights Movement — in particular, with Martin Luther King, Jr., whose “Letter from Birmingham Jail” he quoted. “One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws,” King wrote, to which Buchanan replied, “what is an ‘unjust law’?”

Apparently, they are the ones that atheistic liberals have yet to write, but most certainly will in the coming years. “Laws will be passed to outlaw such practices [like refusing to perform a same-sex wedding] as discrimination,” Buchanan wrote, “and those laws, which the Christians believe violate eternal law and natural law, will, as Dr. King instructed, be disobeyed."

...He concluded by saying that a similar separation is on the horizon. “If a family disagreed as broadly as we Americans do on issues so fundamental as right and wrong, good and evil, the family would fall apart,” he explained, “the couple would divorce, and the children would go their separate ways.”

“Something like that is happening in the country. A secession of the heart has already taken place in America, and a secession, not of states, but of people from one another, caused by divisions on social, moral, cultural and political views and values, is taking place.”

The thing is, crazy as he sounds, old Pat might be onto something.  Maybe
America, with its "bought and paid for Congress," rampant and growing inequality and fierce cultural wars, no longer has the social cohesion to survive united.  If they really can't get over issues as minor in the scheme of things as same sex marriage or voting rights and demographic change; if those things remain an open sore; then how will those states muster the will to sacrifice and share that the challenges that lie ahead this century will demand?

  1. Change you can believe in.

Irony of ironies if this potus is the one that oversees the rupture and rapture of the republic.

  2. Well if they're going to do something like that, I'd say the sooner the better. Maybe if they were busy looking inward they'd leave the rest of the world alone for a while. Just think, the next two or three wars the world would be expecting just wouldn't happen. Even bloody Harpo wouldn't be able to bomb anyone if he didn't have the Yanks to piggyback on.
Bloody-handed dictatorial regimes might go un-propped-up when their people challenged them, countries doing policy to benefit themselves instead of multinationals would go unsanctioned . . . Consider, after 9/11 the Americans obsessed so hard on the Middle East that they almost forgot about Latin America, and while they weren't looking there was a Latin American renaissance which has proved quite difficult for them to stuff back in the bottle. Just imagine if they weren't paying attention to the whole world!

  3. If it does fall apart, I would expect it will wait for Hillary to be in the White House. If a Tea Party Republican wins the presidency who knows what could portend.

I agree with PLG. If this is going to happen, better sooner than later. Get it done, strike some new grand bargain between the two sides, and let them get squared away. Yet somehow I think this would be the sort of conflict giving rise to chaos that creates no end of opportunities for the unprincipled, the disaster capitalists. The vultures wouldn't let it go until they had thoroughly picked over the carcass.
