Harper's Wizard, Lynton Crosby, Deserts the Sinking Ship

He was the guy who was supposed to throw Stephen Harper's Hail Mary pass and now it seems he chose to run with the ball instead - right off the field, through the dressing room and to his waiting car in the parking lot.

Lynton Crosby is reported to have fled the Harper campaign.

Australian master strategist Lynton Crosby has reportedly abandoned Stephen Harper's campaign, just four days before Canadians choose their next government, according to a ThinkPol report.

Crosby's apparent departure could not have come at a worse time for Harper, who is falling behind in the polls to Justin Trudeau's Liberals. The prime minister is facing widespread criticism for for speaking at a Toronto rally on Tuesday with scandal-plagued ex-Toronto mayor Rob Ford in attendance, who has previously admitted using illegal drugs including crack.

But Crosby's business partner, Mark Textor, has recently been ramping up efforts to distance his partner from Harper's campaign, a full month after reports that Crosby was hired by the Conservatives.

"Where's Crosby?"

"The bastard has done a runner. Shit, damn! Jenni, Ray - suit up, you're going back in."

Send in the Clowns!

Update -

Here's the tweet sent by Crosby's partner, Mark Textor, claiming that Crosby "is not part of this nonsense."

  1. I would like to know the real reason why Crosby left. I'm sure others would to.I wonder if the niqab issue just didn't work with the Canadian public. It's painful to watch Harper and his campaign literally unravelling. It's like he's imploding in front of the whole country.

He probably doesn't want the rest of the world to know that his racists attacks don't work.

  4. @ Pamela. I really enjoyed your recent parody piece and I had that in mind as I read the news about Crosby bailing.

As Kinsella knows, in Crosby's business it's all about the sizzle, not the steak. He rescued John Howard. He used all his alchemist's skills to engineer David Cameron's majority just when that seemed impossible. That's the sort of magic that commands the big bucks.

Harper was willing to pay but he wasn't willing to play ball. Harper has to be the 'smartest man in the room' and he must have bridled at an outsider being brought in to make him mind his manners.

Crosby would not have let a client within ten miles of Rob and Doug Ford. That was sheer Harper "I'll do what I damn well please." That sort of thing puts Crosby's own magical reputation, his stock in trade, in jeopardy. When the client goes rogue you get as far away as possible as quickly as you can while trying to erase any sign that you were ever there.

  5. @ Rumley - yes, I apologize to all the rats I have disparaged. My bad.

  6. @ Toby - you could be right. I don't think the Harper campaign will find a prominent place on Crosby's resume.

  7. Hi Mound.... This should be taken wiith a pinch of salt. Crosby doesn't get involved in the ground game of a campaign. If you you see what he did in Britain he has done the same thing here. He designed the campaign, and frequently works out of his Australian office. His specialty is analyzing data which in this digital age can be done anywhere. However, I do understand why his company might want to claim otherwise. They have read the polls and they don't want to spoil their perfect record...
