Hey, Junior. Pull Your Thumb Out. Read The Tyee.

There's no longer any excuse for the pro-Saudi Likudniks that make up Canada's government. If they can't figure out what leaders of integrity should do, why don't they just pick up a copy of The Tyee.

Here's a few stories they'll find there.

There's a handy item about a UN report that finds the TPP, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, threatens indigenous land rights.

Or perhaps the report about the recent European Union resolution about cutting off the flow of weaponry to the Saudis because, well, they're war criminals.

There's a link to a Bloomberg story that another oil crash is coming, one from which there may be no recovery. Something to mull over as you plot out the future of the Athabasca Tar Sands. You might want to get Big Fossil to pay out the rest of the money you'll need for site remediation. While you're at it you might consider charting a new course for the recovery of Canada's post-bitumen economy.

Sea levels are rising at the fastest rate in nearly three millennia and, guess what, that rate is rapidly accelerating. Since 1992 the annual rate has already doubled. You might want to think about how Canada should prepare for what's coming.

You could do every one a world of good by reading about how sketchy offshore money is being laundered through Vancouver's real estate market, ensuring that my kids will never be able to afford to live where they were born and raised. Countless millions in taxes evaded, all that social damage and you're still looking the other way.

There's plenty that needs doing and hardly enough time to do it.

  1. Mound, any thoughts on excessive American pressure, even threats, laid in Canada for going against their demands? We seem to be seeing it with the F35 and wars in the ME. How about the TPP? Does Trudeau have his, and our, hands tied?

  2. How can an outsider possibly tell, Toby? As Kevin Page recently said, we're not getting very much transparency out of the new government. Part of it is probably just a new team settling in, learning their jobs. The rest, I don't know.

We'll probably have a better idea when we see how Junior stands up to opponents, if he actually does.

  3. Specific issues noted here aside, I have to agree that the Tyee has quickly become an excellent source of information.

iPolitics is a little different but also good.

I've given up on Rabble and babble as they aggressively censor the comments - even totally polite civil comments - that they disagree with.

I recently sent $$ to the Tyee cause they hosted and kept a full discussion open on Ghomeshi when the fascists at Rabble couldn't handle it.

  4. Despite Trudeau's attempts to reframe things with his new government, Mound, the Saudi deal is a potent symbol that should lead thinking Canadians to question how deep his resolve really is. If all we ultimately get is process over product and a kinder, gentler style, very little will have changed.

  5. @ NPoV - I've never been a Rabble follower although I can't say why. Your assessment, however, is something I'll bear in mind.

  6. I recognize, Lorne, that perhaps JT deserves more time to get his footing and show he merits our confidence. On the Saudi war wagon deal, however, he sent Dion to run very unconvincing interference and I felt it didn't work.

I need to see some glimmer of real vision and the courage to address the hard issues that confront our society. So far there's not been much sign of that.
