Will Hillary Save Canada from Trudeau and the TPP?
She may be many things, most of them unpleasant, but the Democratic Party's presidential shoo-in, Hillary Clinton, has vowed to reject the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal.
That's more than we can say for Junior. Young Justin, after all, defines his premiership by his success in securing trade. I'm sure Mr. Trudeau is a fine trade emissary only that's not the job he ran for. He said he wanted to be our prime minister and that carries a basket full of responsibilities which is why we afford him the resources to maintain a cabinet with many ministers including one to handle trade.
Like a lot of progressives I never trusted the sitting government when it came to the TPP, especially not when they began arguing for it on the basis that we would be much worse off if we weren't in it. That genuinely lame argument won't hold any water if Ottawa's head office, Washington, gives TPP the boot.
Let us pray - for Hillary, I suppose.
We'll see, but my money's on Betteridge's Law of Headlines.
ReplyDeleteBetteridge's Law ; Thanks for that.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, Hillary can not be trusted on this. She has only flipped on her opinion until Bernie is out of the way...

My thoughts exactly. As soon as Bernie's gone, she'll tack hard to starboard which is where she's usually positioned. She's taken far too many large corporate donations to ditch the TPP.

Why would she oppose something she allegedly had a hand in creating?
ReplyDelete"As Secretary of State, she was a chief advocate as talks commenced surrounding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)."
"Our goal for TPP is to create not just more growth, but better growth. We believe the TPP needs to include strong protections for workers, the environment, intellectual property, and innovation," Clinton said at the event in 2011. "It should also promote the free flow of information technology and the spread of green technology, as well as the coherence of our regulatory system and the efficiency of supply chains."

Kind of ranks up there with her Bosnian sniper-fire story, her vote for war with Iraq, her selling out of pretty much anyone who isn't part of the 1% to entities like Goldman Sachs in big money speeches, her shifting views on gay marriage ... shall I go on?
She's as pro-corporation as you can get - you are aware that she sat on the Walmart BOD from 1986-1992?
Frankly, the California primary is the real test of who's going to get the Democratic Party nomination, and even then, there's nothing to stop Sanders from running as an independent. And you can bet, there's a lot of people in the US who aren't going to vote for either Mrs. Bosnian-SniperFire, or Mr. KKK because they know that Sanders is the best choice.
Irony:
ReplyDeletePresident Trump more likely to kill TPP than President Clinton.
I thought Obama had fast tracked the TPP Mound. Congress will have to vote on it without making any amendments. If this is so, then the TPP could be ratified under Obama. He seems to be really pushing for it.
ReplyDeleteHillary has already accepted the TPP bribe money. Same with the Keystone XL bribe money. These policies are good to go.
ReplyDeleteJust like the bribe money Hillary accepted for pushing through the Panama free trade deal, whose entire purpose was to create the Panama Papers tax haven.
The Clintons have built up a solid reputation among bribe payers: if you got the dough we got your access to government!
If labor unions and environmentalists want the president's ear, they better start raising money. Of course, it takes a minimum $250k donation to the Clinton Foundation to even get in the door. The Clinton aren't fooling around! (#ImWithChelsea2024!)
Perhaps one day Americans will get smart and realize they have to crowd source representation in government.
(Of course, Canada has never even pretended to be a democracy. So the idea of Canadians being able to crowd source their government is an open question. The establishment might frown on the idea of their politicians accepting bribe money from the lower class on principle.)
