Scotland Reacts

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has announced there'll be a second independence referendum in the wake of yesterday's Brexit vote.

  1. Brexit may be a rash upsetting move for a lot of Scots, but wouldn't it be better to wait until the Brexit vote (let alone the recent Scottish referendum) has at least somewhat resolved itself before announcing the intention to seek another referendum on Scottish independence? This idea of Sturgeon's is at best described as opportunistic, but I think it is also deeply cynical: a lot of people have noted that the Brexit vote seemed to be more of an emotional decision, or a cri de coeur from the powerless public upset about the current tenor of the world, and not so much a detached, rational decision about border procedures, treaties and open markets. Why is Sturgeon egging for more of that kind of emotionalism?

  2. Because being dragged out of the EU by England against the will of the people of Scotland isn't an intellectual exercise to her.

Maybe a new referendum is just a case of fool me once. Camaron made all sorts of promises to get Scottish votes than told them to get stuffed. They were no more use to him you see. Out on a thin majority is another kick to the Scottish arse. Getting out of MB ( mediocre Britain ) is the only way to stop the right wing bullying.

  4. crf, You better believe Scotland will vote for independence this time around and it won't be by a slim margin. Dana is spot on. The only way to avert it is for the UK government to ignore or negate somehow the referendum outcome.

I bet if you held the same vote today, the remain side would win. Such is the way of these things.

  5. I'm not sure that England wouldn't want a Scotland still in the EU. Hard to say. The way forward is anything but clear. Who knows what accommodations might lie ahead?
