A Part of Canada Died Today.

Mel Hurtig is gone, age 84. If you don't know about him, learn about him. His passing leaves a void in our Canada. The Council of Canadians, Mel Hurtig - inseparable. He did so much heavy lifting for so long. Now we must fill the void.

UPDATE: Grant G. has provided this link to a terrific remembrance in the Powell River Persuader. Check it out.

  1. We have some real Canadian giants if we care to look, Mound. Mel Hurtig was one of them.

  3. Dana said..., "Kind of a hero of mine."

Mine too. It probably hurt that Mainstream Canada ignored or sidelined his ideas. He will be missed but not by those who sold out this country and those who continue to do so.

  6. Could it be that Mainstream Canada ignores what the broadcast media ignores?

Despite the proliferation of what purports to be political and economic analysis on the tube, there's yet little time allocated to people with Hurtig's depth of understanding of policy and cause-and-consequence, while Stockwell, Ian Lee, Tim Powers and Lord Black can join the discussions on "The Exchange", "Rosie and the (Other) Lobbyists" or "Don's Political Funhouse" and take the conversation anywhere they want, any time they feel like it.

  8. Council of Canadians...

This event drew a capacity crowd to the Nanaimo Conference Centre.
998 persons attended the convention; the most ever by a large margin.( perhaps 400)
The event was barely reported by the local media; if at all.
