Another Year, Another Record.

We have certainly outdone ourselves this time. We've gobbled up Earth's resources even faster than last year and that year was a record. Then again, we've been setting annual records ever since we began exceeding our planet's carrying capacity back in the 70s. It's just that we're so much better at it now.

This year we managed to consume our planet's annual resource production by August 8th. That's a big step up from 2015 when it took us until August 13th or 2014 when Overshoot Day lagged at August 19th.

I'm getting weary of explaining Overshoot Day again and again. This year I'll just post this video:

So it's not so much a celebration as it is a day of observance, with funerary overtones. Why the Debbie Downer? For the simple reason that there's not one government in the West or in the emerging economies or, for that matter, anywhere else that's not committed to the pursuit of perpetual exponential growth in GDP - production and consumption. There's not a nation on Earth dedicated to the other solution to lightening our ecological footprint - sharply reducing population. Leaving population control to nature, however, is a profoundly murderous business.

  2. This cretin is spamming your blog now. You can report him to blogger who will eventually block him. Annoying I know but better that than surrender to the assholery of the diminished.

  4. Don't worry, Dana. It takes but a second to delete his rants.

  5. The Four Horsemen are on the march and most people won't notice until the waters boil. Overly poetic but you get what I mean. As long as the masses can be distracted by fun and games, celebrities and trivia, it will be business as usual.

And, Mound, responding to your post on another blog, yes the desensitizing of Canadians has begun.

  6. If the cattle moo loud enough, perhaps Jr. and Hill will do something about it. But then again, the centrist cattle feel it's too radical to moo.

    Moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  7. Well Anon (Oburst) I'll leave your comment up this time so everyone can see the scope of your vulgarity and derangement. Again, you've done yourself proud.

  8. Hi Mound. As per Toby's comment are you on another blog? The desensitizing of Canadians sounds like an interesting read. Can you say what blog you posted this on? Thx.

  9. Hi, Pamela. I'm not sure what Toby refers to although perhaps it's a comment I left on another blog. At times I get into something and my comment winds up longer than the blog post that sparked it. I don't recall writing about the desensitizing of Canadians although I have written about how we are conditioned by the manipulative messaging of the corporate media cartel.

Perhaps Toby can shed some light on his remark.

  10. Pamela, I can't remember which blog it was or the subject but Mound had a wonderful phase (which I also can't remember) which he used to describe the mind numbing of the American mind and he suggested that it might be coming to Canada. I substituted "desensitizing" because I was in a hurry. Now that I think about it, the mind numbing is happening to me.
