Without meaning the accomplishment of the workers and while there are a few parochial origins to the North American timing .... Adopting "Labour Day" in Sept. was a basically a canny move by Govt in N.A. to kill off any possibility of joining the WW labour day: May 1.
When people around me complain about certain excesses of unions (yes, those exists too), I ask them a simple question which leave them speechless. All of them. So far, no one managed to muster an answer. The question is: who was first, slave drivers or unions? A..non
In this country the people who came here many years ago, were escaping some sort of persecution., They worked hard and 3:09 what a great question. Now, we are right back at the beginning of "slave driving" entities. The only people in this country who are not immigrants are Newfoundlanders. Yes they are. Newfoundland and Labrador is Britain's Oldest Colony and those people from the 1500's when Sir Humphrey Gilbert took possession of Newfoundland for the UK went there to fish. Then along came Confederation of Newfoundland and they lost everything. Now, people like Elizabeth May do not want the Federal Government to make sure Muskrat Falls doesn't produce hydro power to the Martime Provinces. Then arrived Unions and it worked for a time. Now almost all unions are gone and Newfoundland is back to being what it was before oil. So...what is the answer? Do we demand Democratic Reform? Is it time we recognized over population? Do people have the right to over populate this world. Does religion have the right to demand over procreation? One thing is certain, this country needs to stop operating like it is 13 countries. For example, a labour certificate from New Brunswick won't get a person a job in Alberta. It is a new ending blank mind standing over the country drawing up one mistake after another.
Newfoundlanders are not immigrants? They're certainly not the aboriginal people of that land. In fact they exterminated the aboriginal people of that land. Hunted them down for sport. They are immigrants and they carry a genocidal past. Beothuk.
I think you said at one time you are a lawyer? I suggest you look at the Terms of Acceptance of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador into the Dominion of Canada in 1949. Newfoundlanders at the time of Confederation were and are still not considered immigrants. Beothuk are the aboriginal people of the island of Newfoundland and were Algonkian-speaking hunter-gatherers. This was not mentioned in the original comment. It seems sticking to the topic is also a problem especially when castigating others for doing the same thing.
Absolutely, Mound. I wonder how many people know that.
