Mound, for the life of me I can't figure out why there is so much fascination with the American (read foreign country) election. Don't take it personally, the media is full of it. I figure that media companies consider it to be cheap entertainment. Like other so called reality shows the election is low budget to the extreme. It offers nothing important to pay attention to. It's a gong show; I change the channel.
Did you survive Storm 1 & 2 without incident? I hear Storm 3 is coming.
Toby, sure there is the lurid factor that attracts a big following. There has never been an election campaign remotely like it, not in my lifetime.
Yet there's much more at stake that could shape the U.S. and impact many other countries also. First up is the composition of the US Supreme Court. Any lawyer knows how radicalized the USSC has become over the past two decades. It is politicized to the point of true judicial corruption. If the Right regains the White House it will be able to complete the ruinous transformation of that court with disastrous and wide ranging consequences.
The second factor, for me at least, is foreign policy. Not for nothing has America's national security establishment denounced Trump as a grave threat to American security and global peace. It really is a critical question.
Anyong: Not to mention the concern of Britain, Europe, Australia and New Zealand to mention a few. It seems most countries know that Trump is not a good choice for President except the US. Actually, Roosevelt was re-instated for a third term during the war. This election is similar to a war in the US. In times of flux, Americans seem to be able to come to a consensus. Why not now? They need to keep Obama in power until the US find other people to run. Postponing their election is the only answer. I know Mound, you already gave me a reason as to why not but I don't believe it cannot be considered and implemented.
Anyong: Now that I have calmed down somewhat I have to say the following. Some Canadians are enjoying what is going on in the US. For example: I attended PM Trudeau's visit to Alberta on Thursday evening. Waiting in line for the PM to arrive was nothing short of excruciating. A group of Canadian men between the ages 30 -35 who are Conservative, were having a great laugh and in short were repeating the Trump crap and using it to describe what they would do to Ms. Clinton. I asked the police present to speak to them. They did but the "locker room sxxx" continued. That is another reason so many Canadians are interested in watching what is going on during the US Election process. The language appeals to their sensibilities. The protesters across the street from where the PM was speaking were just as bad with their foul language. However, I got to shake PM Trudeau's hand and when he saw me holding a copy of his father's Album he jumped down off the podium and signed the book for me and shook my hand again. He happens to be a descent man.
I'm no fan of Hillary or Trump - both are ignoble to me.
You'd get more traction of why you think that Clinton is a neocon - I agree with you - and the Wiki leaks to show her to be that. Why people still support the same-old, is beyond me.
Trump is just a loon. But at least seems to be honest.
Both are terrible choices. Mound does seem to have taken sides with Clinton - while I don't agree with his reasons, he is at least willing to debate.
Hillary just seems so smug with her platitudes and hypocrisy - to me she is just as dangerous as Trump. The main reason some seem to support Clinton, is because she is no Trump. Partisans on both sides just seen so blinded. Sad.
@ Anon 4:44 - I think I've made my point often enough that one of these two will be filling the existing and upcoming vacancies on the US Supreme Court and will also be entrusted with America's nuclear codes. Do you want that power invested in Trump or in Hillary? Trump's demonstrated inadequacy for high office, his serial sexual deviance and the fact that he tells such endless and demonstrable lies that he cannot be taken at his word on anything are clearly established. Does Hillary embody what I would prefer to see in an American president? No. Is she infinitely preferable to the deviant? Any day.
@ Toby - yes, Storm 3 has arrived and it's significantly more powerful than the other two. My daughter and son in law were planning to spend the weekend here but the ferries were disrupted yesterday. One actually had to spend a couple of hours sheltering in Active Pass. BC Ferries didn't take any chances today. All sailings between the mainland and the island were scrubbed. It looks like we might have more high winds tomorrow.
Before leaving the matter of this most recent troll, here's a report from Psychology Today that internet trolls are narcissists, psychopaths and sadists.
Anon @4:44 "Clinton is a neocon" Yup "Trump is just a loon. But at least seems to be honest." Yup, well, honest to a degree. Mound does seem to have taken sides with Clinton" Yup And his math doesn't add up. Any regional war can easily kill 100,000 people and traumatize millions more. How many people Trump had traumatized to the same degree? In any case, even his potential to inflict suffering (after becoming a POTUS) appears not be that great... A..non
When this USA election is finally over( sooner the better) we will be left with even less democracy and integrity then we ever have. It is a no win situation regardless of the outcome. I can hear Michael Campbell now on his Money Talks! buy LM and BA. It's for a good cause..
@ TB - no worries. Part of living here is accepting the variables of going to and fro. I agree, if it was easy we'd be swamped in no time. Every time I have to go to Vancouver and get off the ferry and onto the Upper Levels hwy. I begin yearning to finish my business and get back aboard for the trip home.
Mound; when I leave the island It occurs to me that what lies ahead is endless black top and concrete. Flash flooding in Europe and other congested areas is often cause in part by the lack of grass, soil and wilderness. During my next , enforced, trip to Europe it is my intention to take along a two foot by two foot piece of Vancouver Island along with me where I can stand just for safeties sake.
@ TB - When I've gone to the Lower Mainland in recent years it's been day trips only. Last October, however, I had to go for three days for my daughter's wedding. I was left rather sad at how Vancouver feels today - concrete, angry and somehow hot.
Those of us who knew the Vancouver of the 60s and 70s realize how much has been lost of what once was - the old industrial waterfront, Granville Island before gentrification, the original OakRidge mall, Queen Elizabeth and Stanley Parks with their once manicured green spaces. I set a record once of getting from my home on 18th near Arbutus to my office at Alberni and Butte in barely over 10 minutes. Today just getting over the Burrard Bridge can take longer than that. As Joni Mitchell wrote, You don't know what you've got til it's gone. Truer words.

Mound; Sorry to hear your daughter and son in law could not make it to Vancouver Island.
ReplyDeleteLook to the bright side; this weather and transportation is what keeps the hoards away from Vancouver Island..
We have to put up with minor inconveniences for near perfection!!

You might consider doing what Owen has done and pre-approve comments. More work of course.
ReplyDeleteOr even make the blog a sort of members only joint. Much less work.
Here's a taste of what is likely to come following the Clinton victory.
