And So It Begins

Trump's press secretary, Sean Spicer, bitchslaps the White House press corps.  Listen to this loon rattle on.

Then again, maybe the inauguration turnout was greater than the press corps understood. Only the crowds weren't all there to welcome their new pres.

"Ve told you ve drew ze largest inaugural crowd, EVER. Zis you veel report, Schwein."

  1. I'd thought I'd watched most of it on CNN and CBC but I didn't take note of this part.

  2. No doubt that the massive crowd at the Woman's March in Washington and elsewhere will be reduced to a few thousand according to the Twits administration. Or perhaps it never happened. There are some history lessons from the 1940s to be learned here.

  3. For a guy who surrounds himself "with only the best people," Trump sure picked a dud with Spicer. Spicer's got nowhere near the slick weasel-like quality that characterized guys like Fleischer or McClelland. He's not fast on his feet, plodding along instead by reading an obviously false script.

By all kinds of measures, Obama's 2009 inauguration was clearly better attended than Trump's. Spicer claimed that 420,000 people used the DC Metro on the day of Trump's inaugural, compared to 317,000 on the day of Obama's last inaugural. This was false, and AP even called him on it. In fact, transit officials told the WaPo that 570,000 riders used the Metro on Friday, which falls far short of Obama's inaugurals, which saw 1.1 million riders in 2009 and 782,000 in 2013.

Spicer won't last long repeating his boss's "who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes" approach. This constant gaslighting is one of Trump's most annoying features. It's no wonder Trump is starting his presidency with the kind of approval numbers Bush left office with.

  4. It seems like only sixteen or seventeen years ago a new administration declared that they made their own reality. Aside from losing a couple of disasterus military adventures, setting off a depression and becoming the most unpopular bunch, that went well.

  5. Anyone else notice how ill-fitting Spicer's jacket becomes when he's in high dudgeon? The jacket seems to be looking for the exits.

BTW, today's First Prize, the lovely lawn furniture set, goes to Scotian for coining the word, "TrumpleThinSkin."

  6. I cannot recall any White House press spokesman so out-of-the-box in-your-face aggressive. Well, one of the tell tale marks of any despot, is the suppression of any free press. This guy went at it. Trump showed the same thing at his CIA address. They're on the warpath. That has to be because they see the press corps as a grave threat. As if.

  7. If this is what happens on day one what is likely to happen a long ways down the road; say ten days?
    Newspeak is here folks ..
Even the republicans are going to find it difficult to defend these people.

    Question.
Are the Trump followers and inner circle something new or are they Tea Baggers?

  8. Mound, there's a reason Spicer's suit fits the way it does. The loose neck area accommodates the radio-controlled shock collar. As Dubya's former mouthpiece Ari Fleischer tweeted, "This is called a statement you're told to make by the President. And you know the President is watching."
