That National Anthem That Has Trump and His Gullibillies So Outraged?

We've all heard the first verse of the Star Spangled Banner, ad infinitum. They might want to change it up, maybe sing the third verse:

Yeah, you heard right. The Star Spangled Banner expressly celebrates the slaughter of those who really fought to live in freedom, American slaves. Here's more.

  2. If they learn about it Trump and his gullibillies will approve of the third verse.

The Star Spangled banner is a terrible anthem anyway. I'm not the first to suggest it be dumped. All of it.

  3. Toby, dumping it would be a shame, because it so perfectly fits the nation.

The tune was ripped off from a barroom song. The lyrics describe bombs and rockets - one of America's chief exports. They taunt the foreign enemy (1812 British) and damn the slaves who escaped and faught against their white American oppressors.

As Canadians, we should recognize the song's about us - the descendants of the British, the United Empire Loyalists, and the black population of Nova Scotia and elsewhere. Whenever I hear the Star Spangled Banner, I recall with pride the burning of the White House.

  4. Interesting link, TB. Flag worship as religious ritual in the US. Definitely worth a read everyone.

  5. It is a terrible anthem, Toby. It's just awful and I doubt that many Americans would care if they knew the third verse and its meaning.

  6. Cap, I never gave the Stars and Stripes much thought. But now I'm coming to see it as you do. Have you ever read how Dolly Madison chose what to take out of the White House as the Brits neared? It was sheer panic. Kind of a giggle.
