Iran claims to have launched a missile strike on a US airbase in Iraq. Meanwhile, Reuters is reporting that six missiles hit the Ain Al-Asad air base. A Pentagon statement claims that two bases housing American military personnel were struck by a total of twelve missiles.
Recently the
USAF has deployed six B-52 bombers with an aerial tanker contingent to Diego Garcia out of reach of Iran's ballistic missiles but within striking distance of Tehran. That's a 5,200 km. trip one way. The Royal Navy has sent a
submarine armed with cruise missiles to Iran's backyard.
ReplyDeleteThe populartist government leaders are having their way with policy.
Sooner or later we will have war or dump them.
That will be because it hits our wallets, not because of any worldly views.

There was an analyst on LBC saying that the base is very large and the missiles probably did not hit anything important or any people. It looks like a controlled message.
ReplyDeleteIn this age of false news I am looking for an article from Iran that claims responsibility for the attack.
ReplyDeleteIf, indeed, they did then Iran has upped the ante in spades.
Both Trump and the Iranian regime are caught betwixt and between.
I have a feeling that Trump , as did his predecessors, underestimate the capabilities of iran and it's backers.
Iran ,unified for the moment, can be relied up to give lives to resist the oppressor.
The same cannot be said for the USA or it's lapdogs.,

I agree, Trailblazer. The West routinely underestimates the capabilities of our adversaries and overstates our own prowess. There we were in Afghanistan, this coalition of modern military forces, ISAF. We had a monopoly on sophisticated satellite and aerial reconnaissance. We had all the transport, scout and attack helicopters. We had the bombers and the strike fighters. We had the sophisticated communications nets. We had all the armoured fighting vehicles and tanks and heavy artillery. They had a gaggle of illiterate farmboys equipped with Korean-war vintage light arms and scads of left over high explosives. We even outnumbered them. Now they control most of Afghanistan and the US is trying to negotiate a deal to get out.
ReplyDeleteWe assume these missiles are as inaccurate as Saddam's scuds. Why? Let's not forget a few years ago when Iran was able to override the controls of America's super-stealth drone, the RQ-170, and bring it down for a landing relatively intact. Western naval forces consider Iran's anti-shipping cruise missiles among the world's best.
I just checked. The Daily Mail says Iran launched precision guided Fateh-110 ballistic missiles. No Scuds there.
The Fateh comes in many iterations, the latest of which have terminal guidance capable of identifying and targeting moving objects. If that's the case, the size of the airbase shouldn't matter.
ReplyDeleteUS technical superiority is developing some creaks and squeaks!

Technical superiority seldom wins the day, unless you supply weapons.
However it does make the flag wavers happy no matter the nation.
It will be difficult for a nation that is unwilling to sacrifice one body to counter another that willingly will lose hundreds if not thousands!
Self sacrifice is a notion the USA does not understand.
