Trudeau - the Barricades Must Come Down
Prime minister Trudeau has said "the barricades must now come down, the injunctions must be obeyed, and the law must be upheld."
It's not clear whether Trudeau was referring to the Wet'suwet'en territorial dispute of the rail line blockades and other disruptions across Canada. Perhaps he means both.
In Longueuil, police have given protesters until 5 p.m. to leave their barricade and clear out.
It could be a busy weekend for cops across the country.

So the SQ is now taking orders from the PM?! But Trudeau said on Monday that governments in Canada do not order the police to clear out protesters. I'm confused.
Cap
Yeah, well that was Monday, Cap. Surely you realize this is Friday. Monday was prime minister Monday. Today we heard from prime minister Friday. And all this time I thought you were sophisticated.
As Trudeau hardens his tone and calls for people to obey the rule of law, we find out that the CGL pipeline hasn't even cleared its regulatory hurdles:
Coastal GasLink’s final Technical Data Report for a pipeline the company plans to build through unceded Wet’suwet’en territory has been rejected by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. As a result, work on the pipeline in the area of the Unist’ot’en Healing Centre may be delayed.
Looks like the rule of law only applies when it's convenient.

Cap
.. I'm a pretty patient dude, but..
When does the key 'player', the principal actor, no, make that 'actors' in this whole disaster, get called up in front of the microphones.. or at least have their name mentioned ?? Why are they skating while their host country is convulsing in Constitutional confusion, deception and evasion ??
Yes, I keep bringing up our foreign guests, LNG Canada. This entire clusterfluck is on them.. LNG Canada !!
Who's idea, who's presentation, who's grand plan is it (or was it) to get this pipeline built from Northwest British Columbia, the Montney Formation gas fields to Kitimaat ? It was a foreign owned and controlled Consortium ! The major partners, a Royal Dutch Shell subsidiary (UK & Holland), Petronas (Malaysia), PetroChina (China), Mitshibishi (Japan), Korea Gas Corporation.
I say (or was it) because Asian gas prices have since tanked, after approval. As far as I know their liquifaction plant and supertanker loading port does not exist. The first phase is the pipeline, and that was contracted out to TC Energy to design, build and operate. Against the direction of Canada's Supreme Court, the consulting, negotiation and approval process was conducted by Coastal GasLink.. which is essentially TC Energy. They gained signed Benefits Agreements with 20 Tribal Chiefs and Band Councils to bisect the Territory that is under the authority of Hereditary Chiefs of each of the tribes.
Aboriginal Title ? Barely in the conversation. LNG Canada simply missing from the conversation entirely. So we have Canada teetering on blockades, the Economy seemingly being ruined.. on behalf of a foreign Consortium planning to export the LNG for their profit.. and somehow they do not even get mentioned ?? I must be dreaming that.. it can't be real. Yet ultimately, that is who OUR RCMP is standing up for. Its LNG Canada that is infringing on Aboriginal Title. Hell, at the very least Trudeau, Scheer, Horgan, Kenney et al Inc and all their political parties could show LNG Canada some gratitude and mention, for being at the very root of this disaster ..
Trudeau has read the tea leaves or had some one do it for him and this is going to cost the Liberals financial support if those lines don't come down. He has made his "tough" speech. What the protestors do next is anyone's guess. If they don't want to take down the barricades, they'll stay up. Some one will try to remove them, with as little harm to the protestors as possible and life will return to "normal".
It maybe Trudeau has heard progress is being made and the barricades are going to come down, so talking "tough" at this time, will make him look "tough".
In the end, who knows and at this point who cares. O.K. the oil patch cares but who cares about what they have to say? the rail ways still swing a lot of clout in this country.
Thanks Cap. I hadn't heard about the EAO snag. It seems there's no end of bizarre goings on in the Canadian fossil energy markets. Mark Carney and many others warn that high-carbon resources are on the edge of becoming stranded. BlackRock, JP Morgan, even MSNBC investment harpy, Jim Cramer, are dissing fossil fuels. Trudeau's Folly, the
TMX appears to be an economic loser. Coastal Gaslink is a fiasco on FN territorial issues even as Chevron takes a $2 billion (USD) write down on the Kitimat LNG port while it still can't find a buyer. Teck seems to struggle to make a silk purse out of the Frontier mine pig's ear.
It's not just the scope of these controversies but the pace at which they're coming in, almost as though they're falling all over each other.
Sal, the petro-West is becoming a true clusterf#@k. Are we witnessing the end of high-carbon bitumen and uneconomic LNG fantasies?
e.a.f. - the railways are indeed the "tie that binds" Canada. The protesters that came out in solidarity with the Wet'suet'en chose their target extremely well.
What I don't understand yet is whether they went after the railways to make a point or are they looking for something far bigger, some sort of showdown? I think we should know before the next week is out.
apparently CN had planned some layoffs due to (coronavirus?) slow down. nice play
I noticed a post claiming that Jr. is now saying the same things that disqualified the opposition leader from the unity-pow-wow-over-coffee in the PMs office.
I can't listen to those guys any more but I suspect that, (tone aside) it is correct
Canada is at a crossroads and I'm personally sick of this crud.
We either collectively choose to proceed into the future, finding ways to make amends with our First Nations partners OR we ram climate-choking projects down our throats.
Justin Trudeau has been trying to balance these competing objectives after a long history of other leaders (federal and provincial) that have also thrown our future to the wind in favour of keeping us firmly entrenched in a past riddled by foreign-owned oil entities and deceit of First Nations people.
Put bitumen, tar and oil on hold.
We need leadership with the tenacity to push us forward and make these decisions. They aren't hard.
Those who don't can get bent.
If nothing else this fiasco has certainly exposed the true colours of a lot of self-styled progressives. I was drawn, like a moth to a Coleman lantern, to a certain Trudeau sycophant's post on Trudeau's announcement yesterday.
He and his most ardent follower, one 'Jackie Blue,' fired salvoes into the hereditary chiefs and their addled followers, especially the 'dirty old men' such as Sal or e.a.f. Ageism, Simon? For some it's homosexuals. For others it's people of colour. Some hate women. Then there's the bunch that demean people a bit older than themselves. It's all bigotry and it's all vile.
I recall when, in the runup to the last election, he wrote that he hoped that cons might "drown in their own excrement." What kind of images must pass through a person's mind that they would imagine that much less express it in a post? There's a lot of hatred there. It reminds me of a different time in a different place.
Sad really.
This whole problem would go away if governments at all levels stopped subsidies to all fossil fuel businesses. No tax breaks, no bailouts for abandoned wells, no low property tax regimes. Let the carboniferous clowns live by the unseen hand of the market or die by their own foolish business plans.
Why Teck terrorist insist on getting the go ahead for a certain money loser puzzles me too . Maybe their contracts make bonuses and golden parachutes contingent approval. That would be a stupid contract for the parent company but this is the oil industry and reality is not real here .
What I don't understand, Rumley, is whether the feds are getting played by Teck. I read today that the federal and Alberta environment ministers are in disagreement over what the Frontier mine would mean to Alberta's promised emissions cap. The devil is very much in the details.
.. I only visited Simon's post because another Indy Blogger, Cathy From Canada said something of Simon and herself.. both to the effect of 'those old men' the Hereditary Chiefs .. blah blah.. I can be a stickler re 'words and terms matter' in journalism.. and Indy efforts are cut no slack either. Two of the Hereditary Chiefs are deceased & not replaced currently, and their perspective may remain unkown. There are women who are Hereditary Chiefs. I myself can be quite uh.. caustic and here n there my manners slip too. I blame the Boss's more than just periodic, sudden, shocking, truly salty er uh unladylike wonders.. quite wolverine like onslaughts
The situation in Canada truly disturbs me. Yesterday was dangerously saddening and it seemed futility & division must reign. Trudeau was pitiful, pedantic repetitive, and it seems never honestly answered a question no MainMedia really cared enough to ask - Had the RCMP completely withdrawn as requested as well as Coastal GasLink workers, from the territory ? He implied they had but only in the most vague way. Andrew Scheer followed Trudeau on TV with a breathtaking, breakneck paced run-on insult to this country & Trudeau, and literally was running over his own memorized talking 'thoughts'. Pointless partisan spleen venting.. or better said a high speed run-on rant.. ugly to see & hear
I laid a blistering factual comment on Ms Cathy and Mr Simon, the hysterical snouting is unacceptable to 'this old geezer' and you read the rascist insults spewed about the Hereditary Chiefs scattered throughout the comments. Jackie Blue appears to be a New York Trudeau fan, slinging and zinging. I never won a single arguement in my life, thus I do not 'argue' or attempt 'getting the last word'. Factual debate, sure but even then, never with a hysterical fiction machine, diehard partisan like her, why throw away time on such garbage
The factual realities of the various Energy projects in Canada and at their varying stages, are poorly served on at least three crucial levels. You and several contributers provide and share facts and insight we simply are excluded from via possibly 95% of Mainstream Media. Such information must be pried from Government or Political Parties, and is highly questionable via the Energy developers or stakeholders. MainMedia is about violence, scandal, catastrophe, tragedy, contraversy, personalities, political thugs & royalty mainly, so I hardly expect 'journalism' that might match yours or Andrew Leach at U of Alberta etc.
Again my concern is not so much the feeble, sloppy ethical failures of Government and the Political Parasites called Parties. Its the twisted or lazy news Media posturing as astute accurate responsible Canadian sources of information Canadians deserve and require on a constant basis. The current failure is dire with no evidence it will change.. it may drift closer to Simon's hysterical descent to worse than Toronto or Calgary Sun.. which means Ezra Levant
Still zero sign to me that anyone in Main Media 'gets it' .. I stand even firmer in my opinion.. that being 'the Story' brgins with LNG Canada and TC Energy. Everone should know that Stage One of the strategy is completion of the Coastal GasLink Pipeline - to carry natural gas from the Montney Formation to Stage Two, a combined LNG plant and Supertanker Loading Port. How many understand that TC Energy holds extensive opchoise Gas Rights in The Montney ? And that they are already supplying domestic needs to the sluth as well as condensate for the Alberta Tar Sands. How many know how much of the electricity required will come from.. you guessed it.. Site C ..
Breaking news Saturday evening - via Boss.. CBC reports Coastal GasLink 'sent back' for further discussion with 'Indigenous Leaders' ..
.. Error ! The 2nd last paragraph is super flawed, my sloppy research mistake
TC Energy from what I can see, does not have Montney gas field licenses
A corporate website I was reading defined large, sustained rights takings
Obviously I later decided the page was about TC Energy, when it was not
OK, I now believe there are a small number of market dominant production entities
That's who will be selling - through TC Energy and its subsidiary Coastal GasLink Pipeline
and on to Kitimaat and LNG Canada for liquifaction to LNG and loading
This is situation is going to increase if its profitable.. more pipelines heading west
more supertankers, more emissions, more tactics to infringe Aboriginal Title
Regardless need to see who is lined up to supply LNG Canada at the Phase Two site
Also want to know where they are currently fracking ie rights holdings for drilling etc
and focus on the methane producers. There is a variety of petroleum in the Montney
