Beneath the granite gaze of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, Donald Trump last night declared war.
Just as World War II was merely a continuation of the Great War of 1914-1918, Trump seems to be fueling a resumption of the still burning embers of the American Civil War. It's the white culture versus those uppity - well, you know. The Culture War at Defcon One.
“Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values and indoctrinate our children,” Mr. Trump said, addressing a packed crowd of sign-waving supporters, few of whom wore masks. “Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.”Jeebus, it sounds like a neo-Nuremberg Rally. Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Fuhrer. The Bolshevik menace about to tear down the house, all that good angry nationalist stuff.
...appealing unabashedly to his base with ominous language and imagery, he railed against what he described as a dangerous “cancel culture” intent on toppling monuments and framed himself as a strong leader who would protect the Second Amendment, law enforcement and the country’s heritage.
“Most presidents in history have understood that when they appear at a national monument, it’s usually a moment to act as a unifying chief of state, not a partisan divider,” Michael Beschloss, the presidential historian, said before the speech.Trump went on to propose a garden to showcase statues of great American
Trump announced plans to establish what he described as a “vast outdoor park that will feature the statues of the greatest Americans to ever live,” an apparent repudiation of the growing pressure to remove statues tied to slavery or colonialism. It could have been worse. It seems no one could quite recall the words to the Horst Wessel song.
shamelessly off-topic ...
ReplyDelete(I avoid these tRump-porn stories now - sick of reruns I guess)
Anyway - back to the mysterious origins of Covid-19.
First Europe,
("In Barcelona, scientists found the virus in waste water samples dated back to March 12, 2019.", "Coronavirus was in Italy in December, waste water study finds")
then in other places, new evidence emerges to challenge the timelines and established narrative:
"Brazilian researchers say they found evidence of the pathogen in waste water in November, 91 days before the first case was detected in the country"
(from SCMP)
Well, NPoV, I avoid this 'where did Covid come from?' stuff. What concerns me is how we've dealt with it since it emerged as a public menace and what we intend to do about it from here on in. The questions you raise are, to me, irrelevant at this moment. There'll be plenty of time for sorting that stuff out in a year or two. Maybe we can get to the bottom of the Kennedy assassination while we're at it.
ReplyDeleteA park full of statues is quite a modest proposal coming from Trump. I expected him to announce an executive order to carve his mug into Mt Rushmore as the Greatest Preznit Evah!
ReplyDeleteCap
Part of Trump's racist message is that the Chinese invented coronavirus and sent thousands to infect the US. The truth matters not to the true Trumpaloonies, but there are a lot of Americans who will listen to facts.
ReplyDeleteCap, I expect in Trump's Garden of the Legends there'll be one central plinth with you-know-who standing tall atop it.
ReplyDeleteRumley, I've got my fingers crossed so tightly they might break. If not I'm sure to have arthritis by November 3rd.
ReplyDelete"Part of Trump's racist message is that the Chinese invented coronavirus and sent thousands to infect the US."
ReplyDeleteRumley - didn't you get Mound's msg just two replies above that the origin of the world's deadliest pandemic is not a topic worth pursuing?
No, NPoV, what I said is that it's a distraction right now. There are many claims about what happened, where it came from and so on but there'll be a time to focus on that, not just now. My comment referenced Rumley's remark that there are a lot of Americans who will listen to the facts and I so deeply hope he's right. Clear on that now?
ReplyDeleteWonding what J. Ebstien wouds say about Trumps proposal?
ReplyDeleteRacism is part of the US psyche.
ReplyDeleteO yes I remember it well!

ReplyDeleteAn epidemiologist, an ICU doctor and a scientist all walk into a bar.
I’m just kidding, they know better.
