On a dark desert highway, hot ash in my hair, Warm smell of Sonoma rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to run through the night There she stood in the doorway I heard the alarm bell And I was thinking to myself "This was once Heaven, now it's flaming Hell" Then she lit up a doobie and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor I thought I heard them say...
I used to do quite a bit of motorcycle touring. I usually stuck to the coast from Van Isl to So-Cal, sometimes on to Cabo. I often took a rest day in the Napa Valley at some inn or B&B. It was a truly splendid place. Some vineyards along the Silverado Trail took to planting the verges in fragrant herbs. You might go a couple of miles with the scent of basil, oregano or rosemary. I stopped going down there when Trump got in and I'm not sure I'll ever ride that way again. My bones are getting a bit too brittle.
Very sad thing to see this once grand inn succumb to the flames.
BTW, Cap, I've been to the real Hotel California in Todos Santos about 50 miles down the road from Cabo. Terrific food, ice cold beer. Another great place to overnight. I don't know if it had anything to do with the song but the locals claim credit.
That's interesting, Mound. I didn't know there was a real Hotel California. The album cover features the Beverley Hills Hotel and since one of the album's themes is excess, aka "life in the fast lane," I always thought that was the hotel they were singing about. Live and learn.
The Eagles maintained the song had nothing to do with the hotel in Todos Santos (All Saints), a little artists' conclave removed from the lunacy of Cabo. The hotel goes back to the late 40s. If you ever get down that way it's worth checking out.

Well, Cap, that sure captured it. Thanks.
