Why Can't We Understand Something So Simple?

It's simple. Straightforward as it can be. No elaborate theories needed. Just two facts, mathematical certainties.

Since 1970, the population of non-human animals species has declined by 68 percent.

Since 1970, the population of that other species, homo sapiens or humans, has more than doubled.

D'ya think they're connected somehow, one species skyrocketing in numbers while the rest of the species' populations plummet? Do you think that's just an incredible coincidence? Do you think any of this bodes well for that outlier species, homo sapiens?

When was the last time you heard your government talk about this? Never? What about the leader of your party of preference? Does this come up in their conversations? No? Isn't that curious?

A wall of silence is a wall of indifference and that leads to a wall of inaction.

We should be scared out of our wits at these two, oh so simple facts. We're not. We don't want to know.

  1. We are a rather ignorant self serving lot in general but Ma Nature knows the score and will eventually have the final say, Mound..... to the detriment of the whole world and all life on it!
Not in MY lifetime but not optimistic for the youth of our day under current circumstances ....

  2. I wish I could share your confidence this breakdown won't happen in our lifetimes, Rural. What gives me doubt is that the 'cascades' the science types warned us about are happening. California is a prime example. A resurgence of Covid-19. A succession of killer heat waves. Massive wildfires. A la Nina winter. Taken in isolation these are all endurable. It's when they come in succession that they sap your resilience. What happens when that gets tapped out?

How many pandemics, potentially far worse than Covid-19, can our governments fight before they're out of funds? How many more setbacks can the average, working class family sustain? I don't know but there's a real prospect we may find out before we're done, Rural.

  4. Religion is the major factor as to why Goverments do not speak about over population. Why, religion is the first item mentioned in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And we certainly cannot have women deciding whether they want children or not...heaven forbid!!

  5. Rural, you should check out Thomas Homer-Simpson's latest book, "Commanding Hope." It's the reasoned balance you seek.

I have the Kindle edition. His thrust seems to be we must take the deepest measure of these emergencies because that is how we can gain the fullest understanding on which we can build hope necessary to find solutions, even if only partial. Sometimes we perceive reasoned optimism as pessimism. That can be a dangerous distraction.
