Some Things, It Seems, Just Won't Die. Remembering the Sponsorship Scandal.
Twenty years is often enough to purge bad memories. It's fair to say that most Canadians today have only the vaguest and often inaccurate recollection of the Chretien government. One thing they tend to recall is the Sponsorship Scandal, AdScam, the fiasco that occurred on Chretien's watch.
How many even remember the name Jacques Corriveau? The Chretien-era Liberal Party organizer has just been convicted of influence peddling, producing fake documents and laundering the proceeds of crime. The Crown alleged Corriveau received $6-million in cheques and another million in cash for work that was never performed. The jury agreed on all three counts.
The Crown has already seized a million in cash and Corriveau's home which, pending some appeal, can be confiscated and returned to the new Liberal government's treasury.
Sentencing arguments are expected later this month.
