Back In The Day

There was a day when people around the world, including most Canadians, believed that freedom from fascism was worth dying for. A generation of young people put their lives on hold and their futures at risk to join the fight.

They put on their new uniforms and prepared to say goodbye to their families for the duration.

Some still found time to get married, putting aside the uncertainty of what might lay in store.

They found as much time together as they could, knowing it wouldn't be much.

And then they were separated, indefinitely, to await what fate held for them. For many, it was the last they would see each other, hold each other.

The lucky came home, some of them less intact than others. Fascism was defeated, or so they thought. They got back on with their lives, the world safe for democracy - or so they were told.
