It's a given that both opposition leaders aren't willing to risk being seen as adverse to the Athabasca Tar Sands or bitumen trafficking lest that cost them the miniscule bucket of votes they might stand to get from Alberta in the next election. Okay, that's off limits, I get it.
Here's something they can do that won't unduly burden their feeble political spines. They can pledge, right now, to ensure that alternative, clean energy technology receives grants, deferrals and subsidies, direct and indirect, equal to those we now lavish on our fossil fuelers. They should top that up with the amount they're shouldering on behalf of Big Fossil for carbon capture and other research efforts.
It's not like I'm asking either of them to grow a pair.

A practical and succinct suggestion that, given the fecklessness of certain opposition leaders, Mound, would undoubtedly inspire fear and that deer-trapped-in-the-headlights-look common to their ilk.
Yes, Lorne, I fear you're right.
Mound, you sound like a bloody Con bot when you refer to Thomas Mulcair as Tommy boy. I am not happy with the blue shift of the NDP and Liberals either but I also recognize that it will be the leader of one of the three predominant parties who will be PM elect after the next federal election, which is now much less than two years away.
The time for panning all the players as unworthy has passed. If we can accept that the party of either Justin Trudeau or Thomas Mulcair is a less unpalatable alternative to the status quo then we must stop undermining them and begin supporting at least one of them. Do it even if you must hold your nose. I know I am.
I too would prefer "none of the above" but that isn't going to be on the ballot. We can feel trapped all we want by the shift to the right that our politics has taken, but if we continue to pine for a truly progressive alternative we all but guarantee the party of Harper another four year license to wreck up our nation.
If anyone but a Conservative is in line for 24 Sussex after the next election I'll consider that a win for all of Canada.
I'm sorry, Elliott, but I've held my breath (and my nose) for too long, far too long, to have much beyond contempt for Tommy Boy or Trudeau the Lesser. That shit is over for me. I have moved to the Green Party for a reason, several reasons.
BTW, I call him "Tommy Boy" for good reason. You don't have to like it but you have no cause calling me a Con-Bot. I wouldn't trust that guy out of my eyesight. You're free to vote for him. I don't think Canada has enough time left to change course to screw around with Mulcair or Trudeau.
A thousand pardons Mound. I did not mean to equate you to con bot and I am well aware of your progressive cred and dedication to environmental issues. You do have to admit though that Tommy boy is the sort of thing you'd expect to read at Small Dead Animals, albeit it is probably the most respectful thing there about the NDP leader.
I am voting for Hedy Fry in the next election. Perhaps Justin Trudeau will surprise us all. At any rate it is either that or pack up and move to Costa Rica, which is my plan B should the Conservatives remain in power in two years.
Elliott, no offence taken, but, if you're going to hightail it, think twice about Costa Rica. There's a reason the grey whales, the humpbacks, the anchovies and sardines, the Humboldt squid and other species are moving into British Columbia and, without exception, they're migrating out of the south.
Perhaps Justin Trudeau will surprise us all. I doubt it. He's all Maggie and almost no Pierre. Without that intellect he's an empty suit.
I gave Ignatieff more than ample benefit of the doubt and I've done the same for Trudeau the Lesser (and Tommy Boy). Sorry, I'm done.
