It's Like The Good Old Days of Reform, All Over Again.

Mr. Speaker, I Rise on a Point of Fodder

Preston Manning's legacy might just be his relentless efforts while Reform leader to keep the bigotry in his caucus under wraps.  Those who were too obvious to be ignored were sometimes shown the door although it did have to be pretty outrageous.

But we all know there's plenty of them still around even if they have been trained to bite their tongues.  Every now and then one of them stumbles to remind us. The latest is "Lardass Larry" Miller.

In a conversation with a caller to CFOS in Owen Sound, Ont., Mr. Miller said he was baffled by a court’s decision to strike down the Harper government’s ban on wearing face coverings during citizenship ceremonies.

“I’m so sick and tired of people wanting to come here because they know it’s a good country and then they want to change things before they even really officially become a Canadian,” said Mr. Miller, the MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.

“Like, frankly, if you’re not willing to show your face in a ceremony that you’re joining the best country …. if you don’t like that or don’t want to do that, stay the hell where you came from.”

“I think most Canadians feel the same,” he said. “That’s maybe saying it a little harshly, but it’s the way I feel.”

Sometimes you just gotta speak from the heart and tell it like it is, eh Larry?

  1. The reform crazies are knucklewalking to the mike and breaking Harper's omerta. Harper no longer frightens them. Its as if they know Harper won't be around long and the next leader will welcome sexist, racist rednecks.

Makes one wonder what the internal polling shows.

  2. When the Prime Minister legitimizes racism he opens a can of worms out of which crawl a great deal of slime.

  3. Harper's recent pronouncements have made this kind of thing acceptable for his followers.

It's out of the bottle and he won't be able to put it back in.

  4. I find it interesting all the attention this is getting. It's not like the person's identity would be in doubt.

Meanwhile, a couple of years ago there was an "official" citizenship ceremony broadcast on Sun News that turned out to be fake. To me, that is a bigger issue.

  6. It amazes me when I go to MSM comment sections to articles relating to this kind of thing, how many people you find parroting this sentiment. Like, would they really have cared the tiniest bit about this if they hadn't been told to? It's not even red meat for the base, it's ersatz crap the base believes is red meat because they were told to while sleepwalking.

  7. I think this issue appeals to some of the more base instincts in a segment of Canadian society. It wasn't that long ago that a good many Canadians loathed Catholics and viewed them with deep suspicion.

  8. Bigotry is fear in a mask; fear is the defining characteristic of Harper's base, fear of pretty much anything he tells them they should be afraid of.

If he tells them they should fear even you and me they'll hurry along the passage of a bill that will make sure we can't do anything to them.

    C-51.
