Sex Could Solve Roman Catholicism's Biggest Problems
The debate is open again as to whether Roman Catholic priests should have to be celibate.
Britain's top Catholic, Cardinal Keith O'Brien says the next Pope should re-open the issue of ecclesiastical celibacy.
Britain's most senior Catholic has suggested Catholic priests should be able to marry and have children, saying the demand for celibacy was not of "divine origin".
In one of the most significant breaks with Catholic orthodoxy, Cardinal Keith O'Brien said many priests found it "very difficult to cope" with the celibate life and suggested lifting that ban could soon happen in the wider church.
The cardinal suggested that the next pope could review the marriage ban for priests. Marriage is allowed in some cases within the church already. The English Catholic church has accepted married former Anglican priests, under a policy introduced in 2011 by the present pope, Benedict XVI.
In an interview with the BBC, he said there were some elements of Catholic teaching which were "basic dogmatic belief" – such as opposition to abortion and euthanasia. But the proscription against priest's marrying was not one of them.
"For example the celibacy of the clergy, whether priests should marry – Jesus didn't say that," O'Brien said. "There was a time when priests got married, and of course we know at the present time in some branches of the church – in some branches of the Catholic church – priests can get married, so that is obviously not of divine origin and it could get discussed again."

Those Catholics and Their Bizarre Morality
There's a furor among Catholic ranks in Modesto, California sparked by a letter sent to parishoners by Priest Joseph Illo of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Father Joe put his flock on notice that, if they'd voted for Obama, they'd better get their holy backsides into the confessional so they could be forgiven before they next took communion. All in the name of preserving their "state of grace" as it were.
That got a lot of the parishoners up in arms. How dare a guy from an organization with such a rich history of covering up the buggery of little kids by its stewards, accuse them of sinning by voting for Obama?
It wasn't long before Father Joe's boss, Bishop Stephen Blaire got dragged in. Bishop Steve said it was only if you voted for Obama in support of his pro-choice stance that you had sinned and needed absolution. If you voted for him because you dig guys with good tans, no problem.
Question. If condoning abortion is a mortal sin, is it a mortal sin to condone and participate in a church whose priests have a quirky habit of diddling kids and whose leadership has a proven track record of covering up for them? Wouldn't that mean you would have to make confession before and after taking communion?
