Is Toronto's Head on the Climate Block?

Toronto may be in line to get hammered by climate change in the decades to come.
Out of 85 major cities around the world, Toronto is projected to experience the fourth largest climate shift by 2050 if nothing is done to curb global carbon emissions, according to a new study by Nestpick, based in Berlin. The apartment rental platform used research methodologies and reports from established climate change experts to compare the cities’ climates, average temperature, sea-level changes and water stress.

Toronto’s average temperature is expected to rise 3 C compared to that metric 1970 to 2000. As a result, the city’s climate will change from “continental” to “temperate,” meaning winters will be warmer and rainy, the research suggests.

Ottawa and Montreal ranked 15th and 16th in terms of how much their climates will shift, and both could see a temperature change of more than 3 C, the study said.

Calgary will see less change in its climate, with a 2.14 C temperature increase by 2050 and continued warm summers and cold winters.

Nice chart. Thanks. Two cities I couldn't find: Vancouver & Miami. Are they missing because they are not expected to change much or because they are total write offs?

Good question, Toby. I was wondering the same thing about Vancouver. I just checked again. Miami is there at #62.

Crap! So now we're in for Vancouver's weather but without the ocean and the mountains?! Oh well, at least the risk of earthquakes is still lower. Dougie better not get any ideas about fracking!

Don't worry too much, Cap. I expect you won't get the Wet Coast wet. My friends in Tofino have been having a rough time getting out lately. The one and only highway out of town has washed out. It's a real bugger of a road in mid-summer. Today they're expected to get 150 mm. of 'fresh off the Pacific' rain - mudslides, rockslides, who knows. On the civilized side of the island it's been bad enough. Tofino is also Ground Zero for the "Big One." When it hits the tsunami is expected to make Fukushima look like a ripple on a swill bucket. That said the summers are magnificent, especially the sunsets.
