The Suit's Fine, It's Your Credibility That's In Tatters

Tony Blair stunned - well, nobody - by proclaiming that the conflict in Iraq has "evolved", demanding a new approach to the insurgency. In other words the old approach that failed continuously for the past three years needs an upgrade. Maybe what Tony really means is that American congressional power has evolved, suddenly and disastrously for his pal George, and so staying the course is no longer an option. Duh.

Years of playing George Bush's lapdog has left Blair's credibility in tatters. Nobody listens to him very much any more but he has only himself to thank for that. His latest comments showing how removed he is from reality just further undermine his views.

Maybe there's better news from just down the road in Afghanistan. Nope, sorry. The front page story in today's Globe & Mail reveals - surprise, surprise - that the Karzai government (the one our soldiers are dying to protect) is seen by its people for what it is - corrupt and predatory. My God, when the Globe finally realizes something like this, it must be true.

Our top generals say we've got six months to win the "hearts and minds" of the Afghan people or else the Taliban win. Six months. Maybe we could make a good start by turning our firepower on the Kabul government, the very one that's undermining our painful efforts to support it. Now there's an "evolved" approach for you.

Meanwhile, Tony didn't pull any punches in laying out preconditions for talks with Iran and Syria about stabilizing the region. Let's hope Damascus and Tehran haven't noticed that Blair and Bush are a spent force.
