Trump Rigs the November Vote

Donald Trump is, as expected, out to do whatever he can to skew the vote this November 3rd.  With the pandemic showing no sign of abating and a 'second wave' still expected this fall Trump knows that restricting the vote is critical to his chances of re-election.

Part of that means making voting harder, more onerous and more dangerous. That means ensuring that Americans don't have the option to conveniently and safely vote by mail-in balloting. What better way to pull that off but to ensure the postal service cannot receive the funding needed to accommodate mail-in voting.  From Associated Press.
“They need that money in order to have the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump said on [Fox Business Network show] “Mornings with Maria,” adding, “If they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting because they’re not equipped to have it.”
Biden’s campaign jumped on Trump’s comments, likening the president’s actions to sabotage.
“The President of the United States is sabotaging a basic service that hundreds of millions of people rely upon, cutting a critical lifeline for rural economies and for delivery of medicines, because he wants to deprive Americans of their fundamental right to vote safely during the most catastrophic public health crisis in over 100 years,” Biden spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement.

Of course it goes without saying America is out of the notion of in a sane world, so that makes what should be an open and shut impeachment case hardly worth the bother. Heck why not put on the November ballot to amend the constitution to remove the impeachment clause and while they're at it, the 25th amendment, neither of which is of any use since the type of president it was designed to prevent remains in office and will likely cheat his way to a second term. So what's the plan for the five states - Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Utah - that currently conduct elections almost entirely by mail? I guess nobody cares because they're not swing states and all but Utah vote blue.

If I were an American in a state where my vote could make a difference, I'd vote in the advance polls. There's no telling what could happen on election day or whether the mail-in ballots will even be counted. If early results show Trump in the lead, I expect him to declare victory and shut down the counting. It'll be Bush v Gore all over again.

BCW, the last thing the Americans need is to re-open the Constitution. There are already forces seeking to do just that. Some of them want to entrench the oligarchy in lieu of democracy and curb civil rights. Last I heard they were within two or three States needed to support re-opening.

Cap, we might see an election unlike any other in our lifetimes this November. It's taken me a long time to accept but I finally agree with so many others that Trump will not concede nor will he leave.

If you see the post I just did on the radical right, Boogaloo Bois and the rest, who have mobilized to defend Trump in November it is scary.

As Sarah Kendzior pointed out, someone looking to win an election tries to appeal to as many people as possible. But the Republicans are cutting off people's financial supports and healthcare in the middle of a pandemic, and then tripling down on racism. Trump's not looking to win an election but to steal one.

The GOP has been at this for years - gerrymandering, voter suppression, thwarting every attempt at abolishing the Electoral College. The one-state/two-seats Senate is the bastion of white supremacy in America, ensuring the low-population, predominantly white states assert a plantation-like control of the upper house. No taxation without representation, there you are.

And, yes, I expect Kendzior is right. They intend to steal this election. Should they succeed what will the aftermath look like? An apartheid state?

But look on the bright side .... ;-)
no seriously ...

Election stealing has a long tradition in the USA. But 'Brooks Brothers' riots aside, it is usually done in the shadows (electronic shadows among others).

tRump is so brazen about it, like everything else he does. The milquetoast American public will have a harder time muttering 'we live in the greatest country in the world' while wilfully ignoring the oligarchy stealing their franchise.

Hey, re: "It's taken me a long time to accept but I finally agree with so many others that Trump will not concede nor will he leave."

I am sad that you have joined us on the dark side, Mound.

Let's hope we get it wrong ... in the meantime, I'd recommend the 'Handmaid's Tale". The best part is that Canada survives.

food for thought:
"When? The sooner the better, because case studies suggest that coups are weakest in their first hours and days."

Only Americans can act in this case. The rest of us are just spectators stuck with 'hope'.

There is so much uncertainty as to what will unfold over the next 3, 5, even 6 months, NPoV. Will America fracture? Will the military really defend the Constitution if it means toppling an illegitimate retime? These rightwing extremists, Boogaloo Bois and every other white supremacist gang are heavily armed and said to be mobilizing to safeguard their Fuhrer, Trump. Will the majority yield, abandon democracy without a fight? Will chaos spread? If so, do we have any plan to keep that from overflowing across our border?
