Assassins failed in an attempt to kill newly appointed Egyptian vice president Omar Sulieman. The report comes from Fox News which claims the attackers targeted a convoy Sulieman was travelling in and killed two of his bodyguards but missed their intended target.
It's hard to tell where Fox got its information. The White House has refused to comment. There's no mention of the purported attack on Al Jazeera. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz is simply carrying the Fox report. Nothing yet in The New York Times or The Guardian.
This could very well be a Mubarak set up just as the pro-Mubarak protesters were exposed as thugs working on the orders of the government. Or it could simply be Fox News sensationalist drivel. The New York Times reports that CNN has rebounded to lead both MSNBC and Fox in the cable news ratings war thanks to its coverage of the Egyptian uprising. That won't go down well at the Fair & Balanced (or "marginally unhinged") network.
Meanwhile, a US State Department spokesman says the American government is pretty sure the Egyptian government was responsible for recent attacks on foreign journalists:
