Al Jazeera has aired video of Egyptian army vehicles and soldiers deployed to force pro-Mubarak "protesters" away from anti-Mubarak demonstrators. The army could be seen forcing them back beyond rock-throwing range. The Guardian reports that Egyptian army units have also been clearing Mubarak's thugs from a bridge at Tahrir Square they'd been using to pelt the demonstrators.
The British newspaper says the BBC has interviewed a retired Egyptian general who claimed the army has about had enough of the president.
The intervention came as a retired Egyptian army general told the BBC the military was losing patience with the embattled Mubarak, and would open fire at regime loyalists if there were fresh attacks on protesters.
The general, who said he had spoken with tank crews in Tahrir Square, said he believed the military would move very soon against the president, possibly as soon as tomorrow.
The Egyptian military is at a crossroads. It has to choose whether to use its power on behalf of the Egyptian public and force Mubarak out or prop up a thug who supposedly intends to leave in half a year and lose the respect and support of the Egyptian people.
