Notice how the rules just don't mean much anymore? Time was it was considered the height of rudeness of one nation to openly interfere with elections in another. That was then, this is now.
The very name Daniel Ortega is enough to set off fireworks in Washington. It was Ronald Reagan, after all, who funded the gang of vicious murderers, the Contras, to destabilize Ortega's
Sandanista government way back when.
It turns out Ortega was down but not out and he's leading the race to become his country's next president. It was enough to send former Contra collaborator, Oliver North, to Nicaragua to check things out. America's ambassador has spread doubts about Ortega's commitment to democracy. An American congressman showed up there this fall to warn that Nicaragua's relations with the U.S. were at risk if Ortega wins.
How do you think Washington would react to a hostile foreign government caught trying to interfere in a U.S. election?
