AP just reported that the Democrats have taken Virginia, giving them a majority in the U.S. Senate. The result is subject to recounts which are likely to be called for in the coming week.
In an election with so many seats won or lost by slim margins, it is interesting to speculate the impact of Senator John Kerry's gaffe last week. A number of Repug victories were razor thin as were the Dem's wins in Montana and Virginia. If the Kerry effect translated into even a couple of points at the polls, he may have cost the Democrats a solid win in the senate. Either way, it's a safe bet his chances for a run in 2008 are effectively over.
