This man's political instincts are - abysmal. With the Copenhagen summit underway, Iggy managed to come out with another ringing endorsement of the Athabasca Tar Sands.
If there was ever a Liberal Party leader on the wrong side of an issue, this is it. Perhaps a Liberal Party leader who recklessly plunged Canada into the Iraq War would've been a bad - oh wait a minute.
The Conservative carbon plan leaked to the CBC reveals that whatever emissions reduction plan Harper comes up with, his Athabasca Tar Sands are in for big, possibly huge exemptions. Harper EnviroStooge Jim Prentice pretty much admitted that to a CBC reporter today.
So, here's the deal. The Filthy Energy Superpower plan is still on. The Tories want the Tar Sands expanded threefold by 2020. The CBC has crunched the numbers from Harper's backroom plan and has figured out that Canada probably won't achieve any emissions cuts at all if Harper pulls this off.
Ontario and Quebec smell a rat and so they should. Those exemptions are going to have to be made up by other provinces and that isn't going to be Manitoba or Prince Edward Island. If Ignatieff is looking for an issue on which he can actually stand up for Canada, this is it. The country needs just that, now and in a big way. It needs a real Liberal leader. This is Michael Ignatieff's big chance to show he's up to the job.

Iggy has already aligned himself with Alberta on this, I don't see him changing.
Quebec is already doing more than it's Canadian share. Yes, it does have the advantage of hydro to help but the difference between Quebec and the ROC is large.
In practical terms Ontario and QUebec represent 75% of the total Canadian economy and it's disgusting that Harper seems to be giving all the break to Alberta and Saskatchewan....
Of course you have idiots such as Adrian MacNair spewing his embarrassingly juvenile crap in the Post...
It's a wonder anyone actually believes his stupidity...
I'm so disappointed in politics right now. I use to support the Liberal Party but I sure would like someone to explain to me how I can right now when the leader of the party cheered on the Bush's administrations Iraq war and then 'coercive' interrogations (torture according to many people) and since he has become leader he has been a cheerleader for the tar sands. Where is the Liberal Party I have ALWAYS supported? (And these aren't the only un-Liberal positions, there other things like Quebecois nation status, etc.) I'm looking for another party!
CWTF, Iggy HAS to change on this. Even if only for the opportunity to turn the tables on Harper and use that greaseball's wedge politics to club him over the head, the Libs have to be on the right side on this issue, the side of Canada.
Harper is either going to ignore whatever committments he makes, a genuine possibility, or he's going to stick it to the ROC. We're going to wind up with an Alberta-centric, trailer trash country.
If Ignatieff can't get off his ass and stand as a Liberal on this, he should get his ass out of Ottawa.
And Anon, I'll be doing the least harm I possibly can to the LPC - voting Green.
"Yes, it does have the advantage of hydro" People in this country need to know Quebec wouldn't be where it is with hydro if it were not for the Upper Churchill Falls providing them with it and we are talking about Newfoundland and Labrador.
Sorry Jingles but I don't see what that has to do with the Tar Sands.
"Quebec is already doing more than it's Canadian share. Yes, it does have the advantage of hydro to help but the difference between Quebec and the ROC is large."
My comment has relevance to the Tar Sands due to the above statement. Quebec has the advantage of hydro because of the Churchill Falls Hydro from Newfoudland and Labrador a fact you did not know. Quebec is doing more than it's Canadian share with the help of Newfoudland.
Yes, perhaps, except that at the time that Churchill Falls was conceived or even much later when the James Bay project was undertaken, it wasn't with a view to global warming but simply to harnessing an energy source for the domestic and export markets.
