New Leopards for Canada?

The rumours are circulating again about Canada possibly buying more modern tanks for the army.

The German magazine, Spiegel, reports that we're in talks with the Germans about getting 80-modern, Leopard II tanks to replace our existing squadrons of older, Leopard I tanks.

The Globe claims that, "...because the manufacturer couldn't make them immediately, Canada asked to lease them from the German army for use in Afghanistan." That sounds nonsensical. Germany is awash in mothballed Leopard II tanks they got stuck with after the Cold War ended. They're almost new and they're going cheap at a small fraction of the cost of new.

If Canada wants new tanks, there are bargains to be had. Why then would we want to order brand new machines at full retail when we can save 75-80% by taking existing stock that have barely been around the block?
