Stats Canada, the department still trying to pull Harper's knife out of it's back, was years ahead of the times. Years ago they asked Canadians to define their own families and accepted any and all definitions.
Remember, Trudeau had pledged to restore the long form census.

Family isn't defined by who you are *or* how you are but whether they sometimes just give you a headache. :-)
