Six Kandahar Dead Are Canadian Soldiers

Canadian Press is reporting that the six NATO soldiers killed in Kandahar by an improvised explosive device were Canadians.

Brigadier-General Tim Grant says the soldiers were travelling along a gravel road that is used regularly by Canadian forces. The ambush took place in the Panjwai district which has often been pointed out by our leaders as a genuine success story. It's the same area where three Canadian soldiers were killed by a similar device on June 20th.

Yes Bill, you're right. We don't see this mission the same way but we are of one mind on the aftermath.

No we dont see the mission the same way, probably never will, it doesnt matter. There will be a time and a place to debate if this mission is to be extended, its not now. I'll respect the desission made by MP's in 2009, we just need more people to respect the fact that there are very brave men and women fighting for us right now, and, although we have all the right in the world to debate why we are there, what purpose does it serve? We are there, we will be there until 2009, because you and I asked them to be there. 6 young men gone, its so sad and gut wrenching, I live 30 mins from Pettawawa...I cant even imagine whats going on in that base right now.

Yes Bill, except I never asked them to be there. I've contacted my own MP (CPC) and the Liberal defence critic to demand that we support our troops by reinforcing them as so badly needed in order to at least run a successful counter-insurgency in Kandahar. We'd have to raise a force of some 15,000 and we were able to do a lot better than that during Korea. Needless to say, no one was interested in discussing the point. Cruising up and down the same old lanes as bait for IEDs is a useless way to run a mission and anything but a decent fate for our troops. To support this mission it's necessary to support this lethally inadequate force size and the counterproductive tactics the troops are compelled to employ even at the cost of their lives. Supporting "the mission" is to not support the troops.

I disagree, again. There is no middle ground here. We, the citizens of this country put those men and women there, we, have for many years not supported our military, we nickel and dime them on housing, medical care, death benefits, equipment and transportation. There will be a time and a place to not support this mission, and, if this keeps up I may be one of them, but for now, when they are over there, living, fighting and being killed, we must support the mission, because, I'm not sure you can say I support the troops I just dont support them doing what they are doing right now, because, they just follow orders, and, for their own survival they must believe in what they are doing, and, must feel that Canadians believe in what they are doing. And you did put them in Afghanastan, we all did, thats the way our system works, and, unless you have an NDP membership card, now is not the time or the place to say I never wanted them there in the first place...no now anyways, 2009 is the time and the place for that. I will agree with you that Jack Layton is an embarassment to Canada.
