McCain Campaign DOA

Poor John McCain. He ought to have defeated George w. Bush in 2000 but was done in by big money and the dirty tricks that can buy. Yet he came out of that contest with his reputation and his integrity intact.

Eight years later and he's trying again. Only this time he's put his integrity in a bucket somewhere while he embraced the religious extreme right and social conservatives generally, anything to win votes.

It was a strategy doomed to failure and it has fallen on its face. John McCain can't get money, something in short supply for Republicans in this campaign. He's had to trim his staff and endure fatal cutbacks but, until now, he was able to hang onto his key aides. That too is over now.

McCain has now lost his campaign manager, Terry Nelson, the guy who ran Bush's 2004 re-election campaign. Also gone is John Weaver, McCain's chief strategist.
