Apparently the guy had a knife - but he was in a damned wheelchair! Watch it for yourself:
One account claims the first shot was a bean bag round fired from a shotgun. That apparently set off a second cop who shot the man with a live round from his hand gun.

It is sad when I have to teach my children never to trust any person in uniform...
Turns out the guy had stabbed a cop earlier. Still excessive force though.
