Lewis MacKenzie - A Dollar Short, A Day Late

It's hard to imagine what's been holding him back but outspoken retired Canadian general Lewis MacKenzie now says NATO needs another 15,000 troops in southern Afghanistan. Well, Duh!

According to MacKenzie, "we need more boots on the ground."

"For some reason we have a tiny, tiny force and an alliance that was supposed to preach one for all and all for one -- well, it sure in hell hasn't turned out that way."

Maybe, Lewis, it has something to do with the fact that the United States was never militarily attacked - the implicit scenario for which NATO was created. It suffered a devastating, criminal attack. On the other hand, maybe there's something in the fact that Washington exploited NATO to mind the shop in Afghanistan so Bush/Cheney could pursue their other adventure in Iraq. Maybe it's the realization that we might have been out of Afghanistan a long time ago if they hadn't. Maybe there's something in the fact that we're now in year six of this mess and, this late in the game, things are still going downhill. Who knows, maybe it's that Afghanistan simply isn't worth it.

So, Lewis MacKenzie wants a surge, does he? Maybe the United States could free up that extra 15,000 and more, many more, if it just quit screwing around in Iraq, eh Lew?
